Maybe I expected to much for my first Flynn novel evolving his popular character Mitch Rapp because as another reviewer pointed out I felt it lacked any real intrigue or suspense, I don't like to quote others but I believe that really sums up my first experience with a Vince Flynn novel. I found the first half which evolves Mitch Rapp's introduction and training into black operations enjoyable but his first adventure (mission) following said intro and training to be rather flat and mostly uneventful, again lacking suspense. Maybe it would have been better if I would have been like so many others and read previous books from the Mitch Rapp series but I know this is the prequel to the first book in the series so I started here, maybe I will enjoy the next book in the series more which is actually the first in the series, got to start somewhere I guess.
I guess yes but only because I had time invested into reading the first two episodes so I had to see how it ended.
Ok look I love Greig Beck's work I actually enjoy everything he puts out but in this book a fairly large scene takes place in a small town called Tullahoma in Tennessee which I'm very familiar with and it has just under 19,000 population. However Mr. Beck describes the place as a population of 500,000 and actually says its not a backwaters place when in fact that is exactly what it is. I had trouble getting past that plus he refers to one rifle as .99 caliber which is ridiculous there has never been such a thing, there is however a sniper rifle made by Barrett that is a monster .50 caliber and called the model 99 which I think possibly got mixed up in Mr. Becks or editors research. That sort of stuff really puts me off because now I have to wonder if everything else I'm reading needs fact checked. There is science fiction where authors can get away with well just about anything I get that but then there is real life things that need to be told accurately
Sean Mangan is again a great narrator, I hope he continues narration in all of Greig Beck books.
Green Hell is the third in the Alex Hunter series and by far the best, the series has always taken a slight horror element nothing to scary more Sci-Fi but Green Hell certainly cranks the horror element up a notch in the creepy factor, again not really scary just darn creepy in some parts.
I'm not sure the series is quite unique taking a enhanced soldier up against nightmarish creatures with also a little techno thriller. I would suggest you listen to the series from the beginning, you don't have to because central story elements are slightly retold from book to book but you really need to get the low down on some of the characters that show up in each book, there are not many but it still helps.
Sean Mangan is terrific like he was manifested just for this series, his character accents are perfect, his female voice great and his delivery and pace is some of the very best I've listened to.
If your reading this then you are indeed considering this to listen to, well look no more and buy it because it is better than you are probably imagining.
No Spoilers from me I will just say book 1 ( Steel World) and this book 2 (Steel World) are my most memorable moments, the stories are A+.
McGil,but let me say Mark Boyett is a exellent narrator he brings nothing but greatness to all of B.V Larsons audio books. I have listened to nine Star Force books and now two Undying Mercenaries all 11 narrated by Boyett and I can honestly say I never get tired of him he is one of the very good ones.
They just put me in a good mood and I don't watch the clock while listening like I do with many other books.
This is my own personal opinion and we are all maybe looking for something a little different, maybe not but either way for me B.V Larson is the absolute best Military SiFi writer right now and has been since Star Force, heck IMO he is the best SiFi writer period. His style is not hard SiFi it is just his story laid right out in front of you easy to follow yet very full of SiFi substance. If you can't already tell I highly suggest you listen to this series and if you have not already listened to his Star Force series do that as well.
The adventure and the narration.
All of them he completely nails it fantastic I wish he narrated every single audio book I listen to.
I had a very tough time putting it down, there is no dull moments where I said to myself well I can stop here.
This is the start of what is going to be a very successful series so get in now, I'm not a big dog person so don't think to yourself you must be to really enjoy this book! As I said above Scott Aiello narrates every character perfectly. I really enjoy novels by James Rollins and here with this book he sets the bar very high. Awesome!
Very high but do not read all the amazon description it really spoils half the book with major spoilers. I have never seen anything like it
Only read the first couple sentences in the book description, you have been warned don't ruin it I promise. After you read the book go back and read the description you will see what I mean.
Top 15 maybe even better
Hard to say I hate spoilers so I will just say the castles.
Grover Gardner is fantastic reading this book I wish this was not his one and only reading in this series, if your reading this review to get opinions on narration for this audio book don't hesitate it is wonderful nothing is forced and the female voices are great.
fun, addicting, flawless
Marvin - You just really never know what he is up to or what he is going to do.
Mark Boyett does a fine job narrating, his voice is smooth and does not distract the listener.
This is a book/series that is very hard to put down, I finished it in two sittings.
This is book 6 and is not one you can read without reading the previous novels starting with book 1 Swarm. Science Fiction is not normally something I would get heavily involved in but this series has captivated since book one, hopefully book 7 Annihilation is released on Audible soon. If you are here reading these reviews then that means you are somewhat intrigued so do yourself a favor and start reading the series you won't be disappointed.
Very detailed everything from the bigger picture to the soldiers day to day lives. He also did a great job leaving politics out and letting you the reader decide for themselves but moreover this is a book about our troops and their sacrifice along with their families.
All of the men mentioned in this book and also those who may not have been mentioned.
I've never listened to this narrator but he did a excellent job, he keeps the same voice throughout not changing for different characters but I found this to be a good thing not only because nothing sounded silly but it also does not put a "fake" voice to those that sacrificed, not unless the narrator knew exactly what these men and women's voices sounded like should he attempt their voice, and he does not.
I wanted to but couldn't so I did it in two.
If you like books like Lone Survivor, American Sniper etc. then you will most likely enjoy this book, it reminded me more of the Vietnam book Matterhorn which was excellent.
Sean Mangan was absolutely fantastic, a new favorite reader of mine. Perfect on the narration in my opinion.
I love the idea(s) behind the book but I just could not connect with the story. I don't really know how to put it but I did not feel as though as was there in the cave with the characters, some of my favorite books make me feel as though I'm there myself. Details of creatures and the main characters was great but I'm not sure I felt the same way about the world the story is set in, I believe this is the area I felt distant from.
The author references the Spyderco Manix knife as one of the only folding knives that can be opened one handed yet this is just ridiculous as most
These are my types of novels and I highly enjoyed it but I think it kind of dragged out towards the end but because the history and context of the book I will still give it 4 stars and not 3.
