At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp.

What made the experience of listening to The Outpost the most enjoyable?

Very detailed everything from the bigger picture to the soldiers day to day lives. He also did a great job leaving politics out and letting you the reader decide for themselves but moreover this is a book about our troops and their sacrifice along with their families.

Who was your favorite character and why?

All of the men mentioned in this book and also those who may not have been mentioned.

Have you listened to any of Rob Shapiro’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've never listened to this narrator but he did a excellent job, he keeps the same voice throughout not changing for different characters but I found this to be a good thing not only because nothing sounded silly but it also does not put a "fake" voice to those that sacrificed, not unless the narrator knew exactly what these men and women's voices sounded like should he attempt their voice, and he does not.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to but couldn't so I did it in two.

    Any additional comments?

If you like books like Lone Survivor, American Sniper etc. then you will most likely enjoy this book, it reminded me more of the Vietnam book Matterhorn which was excellent.

If you could sum up Empire in three words, what would they be?

    fun, addicting, flawless

Who was your favorite character and why?

Marvin - You just really never know what he is up to or what he is going to do.

What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mark Boyett does a fine job narrating, his voice is smooth and does not distract the listener.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is a book/series that is very hard to put down, I finished it in two sittings.

    Any additional comments?

This is book 6 and is not one you can read without reading the previous novels starting with book 1 Swarm. Science Fiction is not normally something I would get heavily involved in but this series has captivated since book one, hopefully book 7 Annihilation is released on Audible soon. If you are here reading these reviews then that means you are somewhat intrigued so do yourself a favor and start reading the series you won't be disappointed.

Would you try another book from Greig Beck and/or Sean Mangan?

Sean Mangan was absolutely fantastic, a new favorite reader of mine. Perfect on the narration in my opinion.

    Any additional comments?

I love the idea(s) behind the book but I just could not connect with the story. I don't really know how to put it but I did not feel as though as was there in the cave with the characters, some of my favorite books make me feel as though I'm there myself. Details of creatures and the main characters was great but I'm not sure I felt the same way about the world the story is set in, I believe this is the area I felt distant from.

The author references the Spyderco Manix knife as one of the only folding knives that can be opened one handed yet this is just ridiculous as most

If this type of book fits your description then do not hesitate to buy it, it's classic Preston/Child at there very best IMO. I found the book to be very descriptive and easy to picture the scenes clear in my mind, and what awesome scenes they are. I could read/listen to books like this every night.

Trying to regain his life in the Alaskan wilds, ex-con/ex-cop Travis Chase stumbles upon an impossible scene: a crashed 747 passenger jet filled with the murdered dead, including the wife of the President of the United States.

Very entertaining, The Breach is basically part one of two with Ghost Country being part 2 and even then there is obvious room for another. It took me all of two nights to get through The Breach and Ghost Country, yes it's one of those. You must know what happens next while guessing searching for answers.

This is more of a scientific adventure than anything else don't expect many twist or a big hook. If you can get past that the character development is the heart of the book with very good detail throughout, I would really look forward to a sequel.

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorists worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world . . . and then tragedy struck.

Maybe I expected to much for my first Flynn novel evolving his popular character Mitch Rapp because as another reviewer pointed out I felt it lacked any real intrigue or suspense, I don't like to quote others but I believe that really sums up my first experience with a Vince Flynn novel. I found the first half which evolves Mitch Rapp's introduction and training into black operations enjoyable but his first adventure (mission) following said intro and training to be rather flat and mostly uneventful, again lacking suspense. Maybe it would have been better if I would have been like so many others and read previous books from the Mitch Rapp series but I know this is the prequel to the first book in the series so I started here, maybe I will enjoy the next book in the series more which is actually the first in the series, got to start somewhere I guess.

I fully enjoyed this audio, everything from the authors detailed descriptions which sometimes may seem a bit to much detail but I like that in a book it keeps the mind busy. A wonderful story of the deep abyss and what may lye at it's depths in Lincoln Child's story, if you are a fan of the novels or movies The Abyss or Sphere this should satisfy.

This was my first Lincoln Child book and I look forward to reading or listening to more, I believe the narrator Scott Brick did a fantastic job and I have already purchased more audibles from Child/Preston narrated by Scott Brick.
