This is an interesting story both in and of itself and because of the history of the publication of the novel and the controversy that it caused. It is funny and irreverent and full of sexual double entendre and pretty racy stuff for 1920. I would recommend this audio book even thought the narrator was not really the best.

This is a tough dialogue to read... no argument, and Mr. Blumenfeld breezed through the French and Latin and German place names and references without missing a beat... however I kept waiting for him to get the rhythm of the characters and he never really did. I often had a hard time telling the transition from one character to another and he really wasn't a smooth reader. He injected pauses in the middle of sentences and didn't seem as I said to get the rhythm of the characters.

This is an insightful and well written and exceptionally well read novel. I have always avoided books with multiple narrators (I don't know why), but these narrators were complementary and the reading was seamless.

It's hard to pick out a memorable or favorite part... that's not the way I assimilate a story. The insights, both factual/historical and fictionalized about North Korea were enlightening and explained a lot of the strange (what I thought were strange) reactions after Kim Jung Il's death... Re-enforced my gratitude for being born an American.

Yes... both.

This is a great read... don't miss it. I've never read anything like it.

If you decide what you read and/or listen to according to the reviews found on this web site then you will be cheating yourself. As you can tell from the reviews of this novel they run the gamut. I've never read a book that was "perfect"... even the ones that get across the board 5-star reviews aren't perfect. This is my advise... those of you who are hyper critical about narrators take the time to listen to the audio sample of the story offered for every selection on the site, the selection is usually fairly long and should give you amble time to judge the quality of the narration. It should also give you taste of the story. I liked this book and I thought it was a new twist on the vampire story... lots of new material... lots of interesting visualization and I thought the narrator was very good. I know these things are expensive and if you get one that disappoints you then that's wasted money in your mind, but consider that the taste for a story is as varied as our opinions of everything else in life... my father said, "opinions are like .... everyone has one and no one is interested in yours except you!"

Don't miss this book. This is a story that pulls you 500 years into a future that is not at all far fetched. Great story, great characters and exceptional narrative.

This was my first exposure to David Sedaris... I've been looking at this book in the book store for several weeks and am very glad I made the choice to listen to it read by the author. I agree with many of the other reviewers, side splitting funny. But if you're homophobic, sexually squimish, don't understand or recognize irony or satire, can't read (listen) between the lines you may fall into the territory of the two or three reviewers who didn't like this book... I was sorry to see (hear) it end and believe that Mr. Sedaris has some of the most unique insight of my generation.

Yes, it's well written, but it wasn't one of those stories that I couldn't stop listening to... I had to turn it off a couple of times, particularly toward the end when his "encounters" with the women became "more imaginative." The narrator was very good, and I did eventually finish the story, but I can't say it was a pleasant listen. It's not a fun story and it didn't make me laugh, it made me cringe and I think the author could have gotten his point across (and yeah, I get the point... the shallow YUPPIE existence, materialism, moral decay, blah blah blah... Ellis could have gotten that across without the drills and the nail guns... If you "enjoy" this book you should seek counseling.

I commute 120 miles a day and audio books keep me from dying of boredom. This is my first Burke novel but will not be my last. The story is a "page turner" and Will Patton's narration carries you away... I've got another Burke novel queued up.

Chuck Palahniuk isn't for everyone and just because you watched Fight Club on DVD in the comfort of your Boca Raton condo doesn't mean that you are going to like the book... and even if you "liked" Fight Club, you still might be shocked and horrified by the reality or unreality of Palahniuk's imagination. Pygmy is an amazing piece of writing and Paul Garcia's narration in this audio version is nothing short of brilliant. This is some of the most complex linguistic goop I have ever read and listened to. If you think you like Palahniuk's writing then definitely give this audio book version a listen because it is amazing.
