Mickey has always been ready to sacrifice everything to help the people he loves.

What made the experience of listening to Seconds Away the most enjoyable?

I like how it picked up right where "Shelter " left off and yet, if had not listened to "Shelter first, you weren't really in the dark. The narrator is great!

What did you like best about this story?

    The development of the characters

What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was excellent! You knew exactly who was speaking.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Toward to end of the book with Mickey and Myron...don't want to give anything away, like some people do when they review...hint, hint!

    Any additional comments?

To the person who gave this like 1 star...really? This is a book written for young adults, much like "The Hunger Games" or the "Twilight" series. Keep that in mind before you diss a book! I'm 59 and loved it!!

Sanders, a frightened teen with secrets of his own.

Would you consider the audio edition of Deadly Stakes to be better than the print version?

    Yep.

What did you like best about this story?

J.A. Jance finally stated to develop the characters more. It didn't drag along like her last Ali Reynolds book. It had action, character development and it was exciting to listen to.

Which character – as performed by Karen Ziemba – was your favorite?

    Her mom.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wouldn't call it extreme, although I was extremely happy that I didn't have to ask for my credit back like I did the last A.R. book. It was just a good listen.

    Any additional comments?

If you hated the last A.R. book, fear not, this one will not disappoint.

Would you listen to Catching Fire again? Why?

You betcha! I love the series and Carolyn McCormick does such a great job narrating and really brings the characters to life.

What other book might you compare Catching Fire to and why?

I can't think one that comes close to this book or this series. It was written for Young Adults and I am way, way past that classification! But, my daughter who was 30 at the times, said, "Hey, Mom, you like the Twilight series, you will probably like this one". She was right! Sometimes I like books that are guilty pleasures...you just listen to them and enjoy them for what they are. Kathy Reichs "Virals" series is a good one...as is, Harlan Corben's Mickey Bolitar series.

What about Carolyn McCormick’s performance did you like?

I have favorite narrators, like Dick Hill, Scott Brick and I will listen to anything that Carolyn McCormick reads. She just makes the characters come to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When they had to go back...I'll leave it at that because I hate it when people give away critical things in their reviews.

    Any additional comments?

I read and listened to the whole series, oh, and saw the movie for "The Hunger Games"....it's just an entertaining book and series!

  • The Black Box: Harry Bosch, Book 18

    Story
    (1093)

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

What did you like best about The Black Box? What did you like least?

Not much...okay maybe the last 1/8th of the book.

Has The Black Box turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

How could the performance have been better?

Get Len Cariou back or even Dick Hill. This Michael McConnohie got a little better as the book went on, but I wouldn't buy anything he read again. That's why I haven't listened to quite a few of Harlan Coben's Myron Bollitar books because of the horrible narrator.

Was The Black Box worth the listening time?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I don't think the story did anything to tie together the last 20 years....I think it was just a new starting point for Michael Connelly. It was one of the most boring books I have ever listened to of his. Seriously, only about the last 1/8th of the book is worth listening to. I was SO looking forward to this book only to be severely disappointed.

Mickey Bolitar’s year can’t get much worse. After witnessing his father’s death and sending his mom to rehab, he’s forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools. A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey’s train wreck of a life is finally improving - until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley’s trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn’t who she claimed to be.

Would you listen to Shelter again? Why?

    Absolutely!

What did you like best about this story?

Everything! It kept moving and had a surprise ending.

Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favorite?

    Mickey. Nick is great!!

    Any additional comments?

To the people who complain that this book is to sophomoric...really? Just because YOU didn't do your homework to find out that this is for YOUNG ADULT aka teenagers, don't out it down. It makes you look like a jerk! It was not written with YOU in mind! It's like you reading a "Mt Little Pony" book and saying it was too childish...sheesh!

So, don't listen to those nay sayers...it's a great book...just keep in mind who the target audience is and you will enjoy it. BTW, I'm 59 years old and found it to be a delightful listen and a bit of a change from what I usually listen to. Have a goo at it...you won't be disappointed!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The length...too long and the ending...when I got to the end, I said, "That's IT!" Ah, come on!!"

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am a big Dick Hill fan and will listen to anything he reads (unless the story is really bad!). He is superb!!

Did Zero Option inspire you to do anything?

Probably to not invest another credit in any of his other books.

    Any additional comments?

I did listen to his "Hunting Season"and really liked it...it had more to the plot than "Zero Option" and the main character in "Zero Option"just came across as pathetic.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Some one who likes very slow moving books!

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Something from Harlan Coben

    Which scene was your favorite?

    There were none

What character would you cut from Hard Rain?

    John Rain...boring!

    Any additional comments?

This book wasn't for me. I thought it was more like Jack Reacher, but John Rain seemed hard to follow and somewhat one dimension. Because it took place in Japan and the author gave so much detail in his description, like he took this street and turned on that street....it got annoying after a while because, quite frankly, who cares! Dick Hill was great as usual. I just can't make i through this book and have given it quite a few chapters,,,I'm going to have to get my credit back and try something else...anything else!

When Santa Cruz County deputy sheriff Jose Reyes, Ali’s classmate from the Arizona Police Academy, is gunned down and left to die, he is at first assumed to be an innocent victim of the drug wars escalating across the border. But the crime scene investigation shows there’s much more to it than that, and soon he and his pregnant wife, Teresa, both fall under suspicion of wrongdoing. Ali owes Reyes a debt of gratitude for the help he gave her years earlier when she was dealing with a troubled friend. When she’s summoned to his bedside at Physicians Medical Center in Tucson, she can't turn away.

What would have made Left for Dead better?

Writing to an audience of adults. I have read books for Young Adults that don't talk down like Jance does in this book. Quit adding things like, "We were all so tired we would have no problem going night night>" Really?

What was most disappointing about J.A. Jance’s story?

    The whole book!

Would you be willing to try another one of Karen Ziemba’s performances?

No...her voice is irritating and one note. She should read children's books because that what I felt like when she read that book!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger...because I wasted a credit on it! I have tried to make it through the book 3 times, and quite frankly, I don't think I'm going to make it.

    Any additional comments?

J.A. Will you please find Ali Reynolds a real job instead of having her flit around having the occasional roll in the hay with B and thinking she's just another person when really she is staring to come off as a snob!
