While reading this book...and now that I'm finished, I can't get it out of my mind. The real life characters of the story have taken hold of me & I feel like I'll never be the same again. Simply the best audiobook I've bought to date.
I loved the narrator. LOVE...LOVE....LOVE
Story was very good. Easy listen.
I don't give 5 stars overall to anything that didn't rock my world. This book isn't going to rock anyone's world. But, as a retoucher with hours spent in front of a computer, this book made those hours FUN.
Let's put it this way: I liked the book enough to listen to the whole thing and never considered returning it. BUT, I didn't rush out to find more titles by this author when I was done....
Narrator was great. That always has a huge impact on the overall enjoyment :)
Very easy listen. Loved the part about CVS/Drugstore beauty product therapy..... I've referenced this book several times, which is usually a sign that a book was good, dontcha think?
This was sort of a random purchase. I'm not a huge Rob Lowe fan - although I like his work....just not a super fan or anything. But, I do love biographies, so I thought "whatever, I can return it if it's not good...." And then it was good. It was REALLY good.
Funny, thought provoking and quote worthy.
At first, you think the build up of storyline will culminate in something wildly dramatic....b/c we've been raised to look for red herrings in writing & foreshadowing, it's tough to switch your mindset to one of just listening and being present with the reader. There are no dramatic twists or adrenaline fueled finales to chapters. ....There is plenty of action, but the storytelling is wholly un-manipulative. I really liked it.
....and I plan on listening to it again - which is always the true test as to whether I loved a book.
The opening section about her discovering "the feeling" is so funny and insightful & so extremely daring that its worth the price of the book. Chelsea is hilarious & clearly fearless.
Narration is OK. I've heard some god awful narration so i couldn't put it in the 1 or 2 stars with that category of "unlistenable". Still, the narration was just ok.
Story really belongs in a much shorter book. I'm sure the story is actually very very good - but she draws it out with detailed accounts of things that we just don't care about hearing. There's a constant refrain about how she likes to eat clean & is forced to eat things she doesn't want to eat. It's exhausting to listen to mundane comments about how you don't like a certain type of food. I feel like I'm at my friend's house & her 5 year old is protesting that night's dinner.
Seriously, I have to believe this story gets better - but I can't make it through a minute longer.
It's weird bc I'm such a fan of Chelsea, but her friends are a tad annoying in this book. For example, it seems like they've all listened to her self-read audiobooks & sort of emulated her performance style. badly.
also....and maybe it's just me....but are all of these people super super stupid? if chelsea is such a known prankster, wouldn't most of these pranks have been visible from space? Once guy is duped into leaving his honeymoon early b/c he was told that TIME Magazine was putting the writing staff of Chelsea Lately on the COVER. Reeeeeally? Seriously? I mean, I know that Time Magazine does actually dumb down the American version of its publication by making it more pop culture skewed ((that's actually true...the rest of the world gets another version of the magazine....wtf)) but, seriously.....i don't think i need to continue. You get it. It's OBVIOUSLY a prank. Jeez.
so many other examples....and none really that funny, except probably to the people involved.
Oof. Wait for Uganda to Be Kidding Me to come out on audible.
You should TOTALLY still buy this audiobook - the narrator isn't unlistenable....she's just not at all the kind of narrator this (or any) book needs.
Her voice is a bit nasal.
She sounds like an elitist asshole.
She sounds super super "white"
I'm caucasian...but i just hate that snooty white lady voice.
Ok, i've ranted enough about the narrator.
This book is incredible. It's brutal, but still inspires you. Best thing I've listened to since "Behind the Beautiful Forevers"
Not as good as some other books in this genre...but still, I made it through the whole thing & there were several parts that made me laugh out loud, hard. Good enough to recommend to a friend....and I might even listen to it again in 6 months. ((((i retouch & process photographic images, so audiobooks are my salvation....)))
Some definite MEANDERING at times, but she gets back on track pretty quickly..... The brutal honesty kept me coming back for more.
