"Maybe better as a "read" than a "listen""
Maybe I already had a headache...but even if Ratigan's voice wasn't the cause, it surely hasn't helped. The material is great though, so maybe I'll finish listening later with a glass of wine...when the grate of his punching of syllables won't make my ears bleed.
Other than that, I'd give the book itself a big thumbs up.
"Fan of SM, but not this audiobook."
I loved Pure Drivel - - - I love Steve Martin. But, this particular book was impossible for me to listen to. The style of narration (for me) was a problem. It sounds very similar to Pure Drivel, but the here, the subject matter is real life stuff - - I'd prefer to have heard these real life stories in a slightly more natural voice, rather than the absurdist style delivery ((which, once again, and not to belabor the point, let me stress...i loved pure drivel)).
The content itself is really intimate - maybe I'll pick up a hardcopy & read it.
"Taking my 5 stars back for all other books reviewd"
While reading this book...and now that I'm finished, I can't get it out of my mind. The real life characters of the story have taken hold of me & I feel like I'll never be the same again. Simply the best audiobook I've bought to date.
"Difficult to hear, but easy to listen"
I'm a liberal, so of course I love President Kennedy. Some elements of the story were hard to hear...but the story felt very authentic, open & raw - so, it was enthralling. Another key element to this being a very good book is that the story was more about Mimi than JFK - so, there was a non-partisan feel ...you definitely don't need to know much about politics to enjoy the story. But, if you're a political wonk like me, you'll be wrapped up from the very beginning.
"can't believe i actually loved this one...."
Had no clue if I'd like or hate listening to Sarah Silverman for several hours - but I'm a retoucher and spend sooooo much time at a monitor, I figured...what the heck.
Blown. Away.
Some really gut-wrenchingly sad parts - which she immediately diffuses with humor. Lots of non-puke-inducing self-deprecation. I'm a new fan.
