"Outstanding first novel!"
I loved this book both in print and in audio. It is exciting, fast paced and has an awesome storyline filled with both adventure and some romance.
This is the first time I have listened to a full cast audio production and wasn't sure I would like it but it was excellent. I was surprised though that the narrator was a male voice given it is about a female protagonist.
Katsa is a strong heroine who because of her grace can hold her own in any situation. No she does not want to get married for the reasoning that in her society the men expect their wives to be the traditional housewife taking care of the kids, entertaining guests and serving their husbands. This is not what she wants for her life and there is nothing wrong with that - not everyone needs to marry and bear children to be fulfilled in their life (btw I am married with 3 kids).
Yes there is one pre-marital sex scene in this book where she loses her virginity - it is NOT graphic and is 3 paragraphs long. The second sex scene in the epilogue that has been referred to is non-existent as the sex is inferred and not described in detail. I would have no problem letting my teenage daughter read this novel.
Kristin Cashore has released a second book called Fire which is just as excellent - it is a companion book to Graceling - ie about the same "world" but there is only one character that is in both books and that is Leck so both books are standalone. I am very much looking forward to her third book Bitterblue hopefully coming out in the next year or two.
"Better than his last book"
I used to be a big fan of Stephen White's Alan Gregory series but have not enjoyed the last few books at all as I found them tedious and boring particularly when they focus on the supporting characters rather than Alan and his family. I agree that this book gets tedious at times too (especially Alan's conversations with Hella and when Sam is describing the Kobe Bryant situation) and does start out slow but the story itself certainly improved about three quarters of the way through to the end. Reading the other reviews I have to agree that reading Stephen White in print is a much better experience than listening to them on audio. I think that Dick Hill is a good narrator once you get used to him but I do not like the voices that he uses in this particular series of books and found that he actually seemed to mess up a couple of times speaking as Sam's voice when it was actually Alan talking. I think that next time I will stick with reading the book in print and skipping the audio. So four stars for this book but 3 stars for the audio presentation.
"Lots of interesting info"
I thought this book contained lots of interesting useful info that I had not come across before especially regarding the hormones leptin and ghrelin and how they can sabotage your attempts to lose weight. Also the effects of estrogen, thyroid, insulin, cortisol, DHEA, testosterone and hGH hormones on weight gain/loss.
Contrary to a prior review Audible DOES provide the reference guide that she refers to for download as I downloaded it at the same time as this audiobook on July 30, 2010. It is right in the audiobook description - look for the link. This accompanying reference guide is 66 pages long (PDF format) and has the topics less than stellar foods, remove toxins from your environment, restore lost nutrients, the master meal plan and recipe, the master meal plan shopping list, and resources. It has a 14 day meal plan and 5 breakfast recipes, 6 lunch recipes, and 5 dinner recipes. The recipes have the accompanying nutritional info. The resource section at the end is a list of websites that have useful information relating to the topics covered in the book.
Jillian brings up many good points and emphasizes eating whole foods NOT processed and organic foods if possible. You need to change the way you think about food as well and view it as fuel for your body to help you make better choices.
Fast easy listen.
"Wish this was a series."
I haven't read much Nora Roberts but of the ones I have read this is my favorite. Unlike many of her books it is a standalone and I found it very enjoyable. I wish she had made it into a series so I could read more about the characters.
Definitely not in the category of classic literature but an entertaining romance.
"Good for kids ages 5-8."
I personally haven't listened to the Horrible Harry audiobooks but have read several to my kids ages 6 & 8.
They love to listen to these at bedtime. Scholastic sells the print books quite cheap and so we have given many of them as gifts. My MIL who teaches grade 2 also recommends them to her students.

My 6 year old and 8 year old love to listen to these books at bedtime. My MIL who teaches grade two also recommends them to her students.
"My kids love Horrible Harry."

"My 8 year old loved it."
My 8 year old brought this book home from the library and we started to read it together. It has a very good storyline in the fantasy genre aimed at the younger reader. In fact my son loved it so much he bought the download out of his allowance so that he could listen to it on his iPod while he followed along in the book.
I wish audible had the second book Riding the Storm.
"Least favorite of the three books."
This is my least favorite book in the series because I really disliked the characters of Shay and Tally through most of this book. And I did not like the outcome for the character of Zane.
I was glad that it was the last book in the series.
"OK...book two of three."
I enjoyed Uglies (book one in this series) but did not find this one as interesting. I too agree that I had trouble with the character of Shay - not because of the narrator but I could not understand her continued behavior with regards to her feelings toward Tally. Based on book one it seemed out of character. I also got really tired of everything being so "bogus".
I found it too started to drag on for me but then at the end there is another cliffhanger and so you are left wanting to read book three Specials.
I was glad though that it was only a trilogy and I stopped there.
"Book one of three."
This is book one of a trilogy containing Uglies, Pretties and Specials. I downloaded this book based on the recommendation of Kristine Kathryn Rusch (posted here on Audible) who writes the Retrieval Artist series which I love.
I found that parts of this book dragged a bit half to three quarters of the way through but then at the end you are left with the cliffhanger which makes you want to listen to book two.
The premise behind it was unique and interesting and it is definitely a young adult novel. I did not find it as gripping as Twilight, Hunger Games, Graceling or Fire but still enjoyed it.
The only thing that I did not like about this series was the repetition of some of the language -in each book they seem to have one expression that they repeat over and over and it got annoying.
If you do listen to this series though do NOT read the descriptions of the upcoming books on Audible as they will give away huge spoilers!!!
