  • Angela's Ashes

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Frank McCourt
    • Narrated By Frank McCourt

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Karen says: "A classic book *and* a classic audiobook"
"Fun Fiction Tale for this Non-Fiction Lover"

As a regular non-fiction reader, I was delighted by this story and found myself very eager to get back in the car to listen to more. The autobiographical nature and the author reading his own work really gave this selection the "real" story that I prefer in non-fiction. My only criticism is that the story ended rather abruptly, leaving me in a state of severe withdrawal. I do not like to read books and then see the movies, or vice versa, as I feel I blur the author's original intentions, but I find myself really craving to see this movie. I have since figured out that the author continues his tale in the book "Tis." I won't be able to download that fast enough.

  • Angels and Demons

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs)
    • By Dan Brown
    • Narrated By Richard Poe

World-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. What he discovers is unimaginable: a deadly vendetta against the Catholic Church by a centuries - old underground organization - the Illuminati.

Mark Grannis says: "Not history, not theology, just great fiction"
"Not as good as DaVinci Code"

I listened to the DaVinci Code first, and wanted to hear more. I felt like I was listening to the same story all over again and was very disappointed. I will stick to non-fiction titles to learn more about the religious controversies.

  • God's Equation: Einstein, Relativity, and the Expanding Universe

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Amir D. Aczel
    • Narrated By Kent Broadhurst

The product of research around the globe and interviews with dozens of prominent scientists, God's Equation tells us it is almost as though Einstein were God's mouthpiece, revealing the most fundamental truths about our larger environment, truths scientists are just now confirming.

Robert says: "More biography than science"
    "Can't Get Into It..."

I listened to this book for three days worth of commute, but was never able to become involved with the story. It felt very textbook rather than entertaining. I was much more engaged by the novel "A Short History of Nearly Everything."

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Harriet Beecher Stowe
    • Narrated By Kathryn Yarman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Uncle Tom is a high-minded, devoutly Christian black slave in an "humane" Southern family, the Shelbys. But, when the Shelbys are beset by financial difficulties, Tom is sold to a heartless slave trader. Hailed by Tolstoy as "one of the greatest productions of the human mind," this story describes Uncle Tom's trials, suffering, and religious fortitude.

Brenda says: "Very Enlightening and Enjoyable"
"A Classic in a New Form"

Being a Civil War buff, Uncle Tom's Cabin seemed fitting to read at some point, but due to it's length, I would have never read the book the old-fashioned way. I was eager to get in the car to commute so I could pick up on the next chapter of the book. It's obvious why this novel is a classic. I realized a few things about the slave trade and the culture of that era from the novel. I did find myself wishing I had gone with the abridged version a few times.

  • When You Ride Alone You Ride with bin Laden: What the Government Should Be Telling Us to Help Fight the War on Terrorism

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs)
    • By Bill Maher
    • Narrated By Bill Maher

Political provocateur Bill Maher tells it like it is in a useful and hilarious guide for the many Americans who want to do more here at home to help in the war effort, but are at a loss as to how. Says Maher, "Traveling the country, I find that people want to do more here at home, but are at a loss as to what. Even when the government issues a Terrorism Advisory, it's maddeningly vague - 'Terrorist alert today! Code Burnt Orange!' 'And what?' I always want to ask, "Bring a sweater?'"

chris says: "Witty and accurate, mostly, but outdated"
    "eye opening thru humor"

Since I don't read a lot of political books, I found many of Bill's points to be fresh for me. There was a lot of insight about American's needing to do more that I had no idea I needed to do. And Bill spares no one when it comes to criticism. I was readily agreeing with Bill over his critism that the guys who drive big trucks that guzzle gas with 2-3 flags flying off it, causing more gas consumption, would be more patriotic if they drove a vehicle with smarter gas mileage. But, it was a bit harder to swallow that my diamonds may be contributing to terrorism and the mutilation of poor children in Africa. :(

  • Women in the Material World

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Faith D'Aluisio, Peter Menzel
    • Narrated By CCH Pounder, Greg Daniel, Amy Hill

These candid interviews with women from Albania, Brazil, Israel, Mali, South Africa, and other countries cover every aspect of women's lives in our increasingly crowded world. Each woman in this program shares her feelings on family, children, money, love, sex, marriage, and other topics.

Sarah says: "short stories of women"
    "short stories of women"

I'm not sure I figured out what the overall point was of this collection, however, I very much enjoyed the individual stories of women from around the world. Sort of an inventory of the condition of women world-wide and gives you something to feel grateful about with your own situation. Good for commuting as there were natural short breaks.

  • Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Robert C. Atkins
    • Narrated By Rick Rohan

Whether you've lost weight doing Atkins and want to make your success permanent or you're new to Atkins and are concerned about your health and weight control, Atkins for Life is for you. Filled with advice and tips on navigating the everyday challenges that come with eating low-carb in a high-carb world, this audiobook provides a simple and straightforward lifetime program that anyone can follow.

Sarah says: "Good Material, Bad Format"
    "Good Material, Bad Format"

I really like the Atkins program, so this review is not about content. I found it hard to learn how to do the Atkins diet from listening. I am finding I got the gist of things, but then had to buy the book to have a hard copy to reference. There are lists of foods, carb counters, etc. that just can not be given justice on audio, nor does the the title try. This is ideal if you are curious about Atkins and want to listen before you invest in the program. It is helpful, however, to have a short listen in the car to cement in my head the Atkins ideas and review the premise.

  • My Life and Death: A Past-Life Interview with Titanic's Designer

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By William Barnes, Frank Baranowski
    • Narrated By William Barnes, Frank Baranowski

By all accounts, Thomas Andrews, designer of the ill-fated Titanic, went down with the ship. How, then, could someone else know, not only the vivid and horrific details of what Andrews experienced that tragic night, but also, details of his entire life?

    Ryan says: "Facinating!!!"
    "A different viewpoint..."

I decided to give this audiobook a try as an avid history reader and having enjoyed several other books on the Titanic. This was definitely a twist on the tale, as the story uses excerts from hypnotic regression sessions with a man who claims to have been Tommy Andrews, the builder of the Titanic, in a past life. An interesting twist on history, though, overall, not any great literary work. Was a good listen for the commute as I did not lose the story in the short 30 minutes bursts of listening in the car. There is a good message, just listen with an upon mind.

  • Life on the Other Side: A Psychic's Tour of the Afterlife

    • ABRIDGED (3 hrs)
    • By Sylvia Browne, Lindsay Harrison
    • Narrated By Sylvia Browne

What is the afterlife really like? In this audio, acclaimed psychic Sylvia Browne leads us on an enthralling spiritual adventure to what she calls "our home" - the place we came from and will return to between earthly lifetimes.

Sarah says: "Interesting, but not hooked..."
    "Interesting, but not hooked..."

The topic of this book was different than my normal "reads." I found this to be an inspiring audiobook that was full of hope. An excellent selection to listen to on the way to work on Monday morning to combat the duldrums. However, even with an open mind, I'm still thinking of this book as fiction. I enjoyed it as a story and I don't find myself overly eager to get any more of Browne's titles.
