Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. firm with 800 lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was 3 years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience. But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Also available abridged.

    Nelson says: "A Gem"
    "A Good Read"
    Overall

Grisham writes so well about lawyers and their cases, and this one is no different. A rich and accurate portrayal of life on the street, the main character actually tries to help. I would highly recommend this book.

The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life.

Melinda says: "thought-provoking, engaging dystopic fiction"
    "Fantastic!"
    Overall

This is Margaret Atwood at her finest. I loved Oryx and Crake, but I think this book surpasses it. As I listen to more and more audiobooks, I find the narration is almost as important as the story and these readers prose and pace was excellent! I can't wait for the next Atwood creation.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

    Sara says: "A terrifying story"
    "What would you do?"

If we had no electricity for a prolonged time, how would we get by. Whether it's EMP or natural disaster, this book makes you think about the our lives would change without computer chips or electricity.

One of the most celebrated and controversial authors in America delivers his first novel - a sweeping chronicle of contemporary Los Angeles that is bold, exhilarating, and utterly original. Dozens of characters pass across the reader's sight lines - some never to be seen again - but James Frey lingers on a handful of LA's lost souls and captures the dramatic narrative of their lives.

    "Book of the year"
    Overall

This was one of my best reads this year. I loved the format and subject matter. The characters were rich and the narrator was outstanding. I will read his other 2 books as as soon as possible.

This is the story of William "Skip" Sands, CIA, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong, and the disasters that befall him. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert and into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, this is a story like nothing in our literature.

    MadMadeleine says: "Moby Redux"
    "One of the best"
    Overall

When I began listening to this book, it took me an hour to get into the rhythm and pacing, but when I became accustomed to it, it blew me away. Will Patton has perfectly captured the emotion of the characters and even though I knew how it would end, I wish the story had not. If you are looking for something different and unique, choose this one.

As the story opens, Snowman is sleeping in a tree, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

    Doug says: "Very Scary Stuff"
    "Oryx and Crake"
    Overall

This a fantastic journey into the future from Margaret Atwood. The leap from present day into 20 or 30 years down the road is both logical and frightening. The 3 main characters are well developed throughout the book and when the get to the final chapters, you probably won't be able to stop listening. If you like science-fiction with a large dose of reality, you will like this book.

  • Sin Killer: Volume 1 of The Berrybender Narratives

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)

Against the immense backdrop of the American West, Larry McMurtry tracks the Berrybender's as they make their way up the great river, surviving attacks, discomfort, savage weather, and natural disaster. Sin Killer is an adventure story as big as the West itself, full of incident, and suspense, as well as a charming love story between a headstrong and aristocratic young Englishwoman and the stubborn, shy, and very American Jim Snow.

Erin says: "Unemotional characters are brutally honest"
    "Outstanding subject"
    Overall

As I cross the Missouri river everyday on my way to work, I loved this storyline. Although there were many characters in the story, I didn't have any trouble figuring out who they were thanks to Alfred Molina's narration. The story covers alot of ground in 7+ hours, so at times I thought that I was listening to an abridged version, but overall I would highly recommend this book.
