  • Stealing God's Thunder: Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod and the Invention of America

Award-winning author Philip Dray delves into the lesser-known side of an American icon in Stealing God's Thunder. Benjamin Franklin, more often viewed as a statesman and founding father than as a man of science, challenged religion, science, and reason with his inventions. But in a time when everything was blamed on sin, it was the lightning rod, Franklin's attempt to control the heavens, that caused the greatest controversy.

    David says: "Thought-provoking historical biography"
    "Boring"
    Overall

I am a big fan of history books including long reads (Truman is one of my favorites at over 50 hours), but I was very disappointed at how this book dragged along. I must admit that I didn't even download the second part of this book and probably never will.

In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men: Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication. Their lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.

Michael Jones says: "Marconi, murder, mix well"
    "GREAT"

A fantastic story and a great listen. I can't wait for the next one from Larson!!

Carpenter, the Paterson, N.J., lawyer whose wealth allows him to work as seldom as he chooses, is recovering from the loss of the love of his life, Laurie Collins, who has moved home to Findlay, Wis., to become the acting chief of police. When Laurie calls Andy for help after arresting 21-year-old Jeremy Davidson for murders that she thinks he didn't commit, Andy can't resist heading off to Findlay with his faithful dog, Tara.

"One of my New Favorite Authors"
    Overall

This book is definitely worth the "read". It is well written and narrated with just the right balance of humor and suspense. I am currently listening to another of Rosenfelt's books (Bury the Lead) and just love his writing style.

The life of Harry S. Truman is one of the greatest of American stories, filled with vivid characters and dramatic events. In this riveting biography, acclaimed historian David McCullough not only captures the man, a more complex, informed, and determined man than ever before imagined, but also the turbulent times in which he rose, boldly, to meet unprecedented challenges.

    Erik says: "Thoroughly enjoyable"
    "Special"
    Overall

I listened to this book for the last couple of months and will sorely miss it. I was skeptical that it would hold my interest for 50+ hrs. and was presently amazed. This is a fabulous view of important yet sometimes overlooked US history that shouldn't be missed by anybody interested in this genre.
