A collection of off-the-wall short stories by Japan's leading contemporary novelist. An elephant vanishes; hunger drives a couple to rob McDonalds; an insomniac wife wakes in a different world.

I really enjoyed this collection. Murakami has a wonderful way of painting characters with incredible detail. I especially loved the Dancing Dwarf, a story with so many unexpected twists it kept me completely intrigued. I would highly recommend this one.

The author of this book has a very engaging voice and the performance is excellent. I find the setting a little kitschy but in an enjoyable kind of way. The dialog is very well done and the deployment of phrases like "what ho old bean" are delightful. This isn't a deep book but it is very entertaining and I expect that although it isn't steampunk that it would appeal to fans of that genera.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

This is a very straightforward book, you follow the main character through a sort of ongoing to do/have done list from the beginning to the end. I think this book would appeal most to people very interested in the minutia of space travel especially the technology. From my perspective it was just not interesting enough since you basically only have one character and you really don't know much about him other than his "can do" attitude. Despite the limitations it is relatively engaging, however I don't think I would read anything else by this author.

Indian Hill is about an ordinary boy who grows up in relatively normal times but who finds himself thrust into an extraordinary position. Growing up in suburban Boston, Michael enjoys the trials and tribulations that all adolescents go through, from the seemingly tyrannical mother, to girl problems, to run-ins with the law. From there he escapes to college out in Colorado with his best friend, Paul, where they begin to forge new relationships with those around them. It is one girl in particular that has caught Michael's eye, and he alternately pines for her and laments ever meeting her.

Would you try another book from Mark Tufo and/or Sean Runnette?

    Aboslutely not.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Indian Hill?

    The entire book.

    Any additional comments?

The main character of the book lacks any kind of depth. One gets the feeling that after six hours of puttering around with an unsympathetic character and no discernible point or plot that the authors simply came up with another book in desperation and just kind of kluged them together. It is so bad that I actually had to stop listening and I have listened to hundreds of books.

MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina, were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever. Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister’s murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals who have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.

Katheryne says: "I loved it, but its not for everyone"
    "Not worth a credit"
    Overall

I bought this book because it had a lot of high ratings. Boy was I disappointed. I expect that if you already like this author you will love this book otherwise I'd say skip it. The main character is one of those whiny introspective narrators that make me want to reach through the pages of fiction and stab her. The writing is also quite repetitive. I listened to it because I paid for it, but if given a choice I'd go back in time and not buy it.

The award-winning artist Brom takes us on a haunting look at the true world of Peter Pan, in his first full-length novel. From modern day New York to the dying land of Faerie, The Child Thief reveals the world of Peter Pan through the eyes of an insecure runaway who is seduced by Peter’s charm. But any dreams of a fairy wonderland are quickly replaced by the reality of life and death survival as Peter’s recruits are forced into a lethal battle in which the line between good and evil is blurred.

    Lollielollielollie says: "Very well done."
"A gory retelling of Peter Pan"
    Overall

I thought this book was very well written and it kept my attention, the narration was excellent. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it really is very violent and gory. In some cases it really seemed gratuitous and did not advance the plot. So, if you are squeamish you will want to avoid this one.

Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals - until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite Me.

Jill says: "Entertaining story, as usual!"
    "Painful Narration"
    Overall

I have to agree with the previous review, the narration is awful. This book deserves and upbeat, sharp fast narration, not this slow dull rendition. I've several times thought the narrator did not read the book first as many lines have rather stilted or awkward delivery.

Loved the book. Hate the narrator. I can understand her fine, I listen to a lot of British humor, but by god her voice puts me to sleep. Like she is reading just a bit too slowly. My mind tended to drift off and I found it very difficult to keep listening.
