  • Ravishing the Heiress

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Sherry Thomas
    • Narrated By Jenny Sterlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Millicent understands the terms of her arranged marriage all too well. She gets to be a Countess by marrying an impoverished Earl. And in return, the Earl Fitzhugh receives the benefit of her vast wealth, saving his family from bankruptcy. Because of her youth, they have agreed to wait eight years before consummating the marriage--and then, only to beget an heir. After which, they will lead separate lives. It is a most sensible arrangement. Except for one little thing.

"8 hours of monotony - lacks poignancy and passion"
What disappointed you about Ravishing the Heiress?

Having downloaded and loved many romantic historical novels by Diana Gabaldon and Maya Banks in this genre, I purchased this download with great expectations. Unfortunately it fell far short and ended up being a disappointment. While the narration was sufficient, the writer fails to create a compelling dialogue. The plot is disclosed in the description and does not change in the book. The monotony of whining over potential love does not really create the tension that you typically find with similar heroine and unreachable disenchanted lover. The flashbacks become annoying. Even though only 8 hours, I found this book a challenge to listen to. As an aside it lacks to the historical fact basis and poignancy of the authors cited in my past downloads.Save your money, or your credits, and look somewhere else for a stimulating and credible romantic historical novel set in Great Britain.

Has Ravishing the Heiress turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. If it had been my first book in this genre, I would answer Yes.

What about Jenny Sterlin’s performance did you like?

Jenny Sterlin did a good job reading this novel.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

  • Outlander

    • UNABRIDGED (33 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Diana Gabaldon
    • Narrated By Davina Porter

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I hesitated purchasing a 33 hour book as an audible download, but took the risk on Highlander. I am glad I did and recommend this book enthusiastically. Although starting off a bit slow, I found the Outlander to be a compelling and enlightening story. I look forward to listening the next book in the Series. I do not read science fiction and am new to romantic historical novels, especially in Scotland. Yet as other reviewers have commented, the science fiction aspect of this novel (time travel) is quite believable and makes for a poignant story with suspense and romance is an historical setting. While some have referred to Claire as the heroine, I saw her as a 20th century strong willed woman thrust into the challenges of the 18th century Highland culture. There is a balance between her getting her way and having to compromise with her lover -- all for good in the end. The sexual intimacy and passion between the lovers continued to mature throughout the novel. Yet it was presented from the viewpoint of the woman and with such credible and tasteful descriptions, that actually created episodes substantially more erotic than the words themselves. Diana Gabaldon creates suspense which is cogent, and with such historical facts, that the reader is engaged in the story. About the time you think the bad guys can't get worse, they do... to the point of wondering if the main characters will survive their challenges.Davina Porter did a wonderful job narrating the characters, except for the voice the Claire's post-WW2 husband. I felt the narration made him sound like an old man -- as if Claire at 27 years old had married someone 30 years her senior. Other than that one exception, I rate her performance as 5 stars.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Outlander?

When Claire becomes the heroine and faces incredible odds to save her husband.

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The intensity of the sexual relationship when Claire accepts with trepidation what appears to be conflicting role as a strong-willed woman yet subservient to her husband's role as her protector and patriarch. When she finally gives of her body without reservation to the extreme physicality of her spartan-like warrior, the moment seals the intensity of their relationship and respect for one another for the remainder of the story.
