The author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil returns after more than a decade to give us an intimate look at the "magic, mystery, and decadence" of the city of Venice and its inhabitants.

    Overall

This book was written in the same style as his last book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good in Evil". Mr. Berendt describes different people who live in Venice and there are different mysteries described in the book. After listening to this book, I have a better understanding of Venice and its people. It was very interesting and I am surprised that others gave it such a poor review.

I really do not know how many stars to give this book. It is a well written book and the characters are well developed. If you do not mind listening to one dismal thing after the other, even the ending, then this book is for you. It left me feelng depressed.

In the late 1970s, Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient, returned to his native island of Sri Lanka. Recording his journey through the drug-like heat and intoxicating fragrances of that "pendant off the ear of India," Ondaatje simultaneously retraces the baroque mythology of his Dutch-Ceylonese family.

I read this book years ago and really liked it. I could just picture the place and the people. So I was looking forward to listening to it. The narration and abridgement were awful. I wish I never bought the audio and just kept my pleasant memroies. My advice - save your money.

    "Thoughts on the book"
    Overall

First, the reader gets 5 stars. She was wonderful. The burning of the Jews in the barn was a very sad event and I am glad the author wrote a book about it. The world needs to know about it. However, while listening to the book, there were times that I just wanted to hit the fast forward button. Parts of the book were so melodramatic and half way into the book, you know the truth about the main character. The book would have been better with some abridgement. Also, parts of the book (not related to the burning) were unbelievable.

This book is for the simple minded. The police and FBI are portrayed as not very bright which does a disservice to them. The plot can be seen through easily and the red herrings are pathetic. This is one book I wish I had not wasted the money to buy and the time to listen.

Of all the audible books I've listened to, this is the worst. It is amazing how some books get published. The story is immature, perhaps a 6th grade level. The relationships between characters is also immature and unbeliveable. A story about Atlantis sounds interesting but this story was anything but interesting.

This book was such a waste of time. It is full of unnecessary filler. I might have liked an abridged version better. The death at the end of the book was so unnecessary and left a bad feeling about the author and the book.
