For Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD, the job is a useful reminder of what she has to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke's big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it’s a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood. Other couples aren’t as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying on the floor of their Downing Street apartment, stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned - and even more heartbroken by the overwhelming evidence that they were murdered by their own son.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The violence was more detailed than I like in a book. If it were my first J.D. Robb/ Eve Dallas I would have returned it due to the details of the violence. That said, the story line is provocative and the resolution is actually uplifting and a bit of a tear jerker.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This goes without saying to much, as the heroine Eve, is the focus and maintains the focus.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Eve tries to read the back of the Thanksgiving gift.

Was Thankless in Death worth the listening time?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

I would prefer that the detail of the violence be toned down. I know Eve is a murder cop, but my imagination can do without the details. I don't want inspired nightmares.

Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny’s been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. The inmates who seek out his uncanny abilities to soothe leave his cell feeling absolved. They don’t know or care that Sonny has a serious heroin habit - or where or how he gets his uninterrupted supply of the drug. Or that he’s serving time for other peoples’ crimes. Sonny took the first steps toward addiction when his father took his own life rather than face exposure as a corrupt cop. Now Sonny is the seemingly malleable center of a whole infrastructure of corruption....

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.
