Legendary author Larry McMurtry—who has both a Pulitzer Prize and an Academy Award to his credit—concludes the story of Duane Moore, who first appeared in the 1966 classic The Last Picture Show.... Fast approaching 70, Duane is adjusting to the loneliness of retirement. Then things get stirred up when a billionaire heiress moves to the area and opens a rhinoceros sanctuary.

Michael says: "fitting opposite bookend to The Last Picture Show"
    "A great read"
    Overall

McMurtry touches on modern day global connections, stretching from Sri Lanka to the African continent. It's a switch from his resilient yesteryear sagas but manages to capture outdoor freshness sprinkled with the familiar style of humor and spontaneity found in all his writings. No problem with a five in my book.

Nicholai Hel, born in the ravages of World War I China to an aristocratic Russian mother and a mysterious German father, raised in the spiritual gardens of a Japanese Go Master, survives the destruction of Hiroshima to emerge as the world's most artful lover and its most accomplished and highly paid assassin. Genius, mystic, master of language and culture, Hel's secret is his determination to attain a rare kind of personal excellence, a state of effortless perfection: shibumi.

David says: "Only a Russian could be this shibumi"
    "Far East to Europe"
    Overall

Shibumi stirs facination for anyone who has experienced or would like to know of the cultural span from the Far East to Europe with characters extending to the Middle East. I'll remember this one.
