Read yes! Listen, No! Amy Rubinate is too breathy and colorless, the main character Katie Lightfoot and the psychic sound exactly the same! They had a conversation that I could not keep up with who was saying what. Ms. Rubinate's other female characters are ok when they have a strong accent, she can do it, although rather they come across rather dull. But worst of all I could have sworn there was only one man in the book, they all sounded the same! All gruff, no distinctive difference.
I do not want to give the plot away, but again, another great story!
Give distinction to her male voices, and be less "breathy and dull".
Read, yes, listen to No! I had to listen a few minutes then put it down because her voice was so anoying!
Am I the only one who finds this woman's voice anoying? I like these books and I would like to recomend them to friends but I would not recomend with this Narrator!
I love this series! If you have never read the first book, go read it first. This is book #5, so to truly enjoy it you need to read the others.
Ok for the fans of Lady Julia. I know she can sound whiney and act so so stubbornly, but she does act a little more mature in this one. (I love her whining and stubbornness, she is a great character)
The story is outstanding! I was actually surprised in the end by this one. Some stories are predictable, but this is very good.
This story takes place in London a few months after their arrival back from India and their long honeymoon. It’s fun to listen how Lady Julia settles or unsettles into domestic life. Of course there is a murder or two, Julia gets into trouble and keeps secrets like she always seems to do. Brisbane is his usual heroic, brooding, dashing self. More secrets with a great ending, just a little sad. Loved it!
If you are expecting depth and seriousness of other mysteries, this book is not for you. If you would like a fun listen with charming characters and a story that leaves you satisfied then this is for you. The plot was well thought out and even though I thought I figured out the mystery before the characters arrived at a conclusion, I was surprised in the end.
At first I was put off by the narrator. Ms. Peabody is described as being only 32, but she sounds as if she is 55! Her voice is husky and kind of grating. I realize in Victorian times that 32 would be middle-aged; however, the voice seems older than the character. But as the story goes on I get used to the voice and after listening to a sample of the other narrator for this series, I have to agree that Barbara Rosenblat is the best. Just ignore the fact that she is supposed to be in her early 30’s and you will be fine. Her other character voices are just fine. I cannot wait to start the next book.
I love this series! I truly enjoy the character of Lady Julia. Yes, she may be a little bit spoiled and can be at times whiney, but I cannot seem to turn the mp3 player off. The plot was engaging. This story has quite a few turns and twists, at one point I even held my own breath waiting for … well, you’ll just have to read/hear that part. Her discriptions of the area made me want to go there. I hope to find a quaint bead and breakfast close to Darjeeling to visit some day.
All the positives done with, I have a few issues with this story. I felt as though there was a book missing between the previous one and this one. The closeness between Julia and Brisbane was just not there. Over all it was a good story, but the chemistry was missing. It felt like a form letter. Most of the story was predictable, untill close to the end. Another issue I have is the overuse of some words. Reflected, waspish, remonstrated, peevish, melancholia, and countered were a few of the words I listened to over and over and over again. I felt the area must have been full of mirrors for all the reflecting that was done. Doesn’t she have a thesaurus? Bottom line I enjoy this series in spite of Ms. Raybourn's lack of words.
If this is your first Neil Gaiman book, I am pleading with you please read one of his other books, try Neverwhere or Stardust or the Graveyard Book. Neil is a brilliant writer, this time he just got it wrong.
I am a Neil Gaiman fan. I love his other works, they are full of fun, humor and fantasy. Even Neverwhere which was a little darker had some humor in it. That book did not make me have to take anti-depressants just to get through it. The story itself, had so much promise. I kept thinking it's got to get better. Our world is full of gods we just don't realize they are standing right next to us. The time we spend with things (TV, movies, internet, etc) makes that a god to us. But there's alot more to the story than that. It could have been really great. The story line picks up for a while after 4 hours and 30 minutes in. But then gets slow again, and I think if you just jumped to the 3rd download installment, you would be fine. After reading several other people's reviews, I think part of the problem is the Narrarator. He is slow. I did like some of his male characters. The voices of Mr. Wednesday and Mr. Nancy were great. But he cannot do a woman's voice. I've heard other male narrarators do great women's voices, but all the women he voiced sound the same, except for the couple that had a russian or an obvious accent, but even then it wasn't good. The rest sounded pretty much the same. Flat and dull. I made it through this tedious book. I've felt like I've been through the underworld and back in a nightmare, not on an adventure. This is one book I wish the author would rewrite. There were alot of things in it that could have been left out. But I enjoyed some of the parts about how some of the old gods came into the "new world". Overall, I could have lived without hearing this book.
This book was a modern Sherlock Holmes with a bit more fun. An easy read/listen. Only one thing, not really a complaint, but I am familiar with indian cluture, but the author used quite a few words in Indian. Most the author uses the english word, or a discription of the item right after, but a few he does not. (mainly food items) It would have helped me envison the scene better if I knew what it looked like. Otherwise I really enjoyed it. The narrarator is Fantastic!! Even though he does the voices for a few women, they sound just like I would expect them to sound.
After finnishing Pillars of the Earth and World With Out End (both excellent), I was calmouring for a new mideval book. Someone had told me this was a good book. I agree the story line is a good one, but it could have been better. When the story really gets going, it stops and bam you are 3 months to 3 years later and the charachters are passively takling about what had happend. I wish the author had actually writen those scenes, she could have been so much more discriptive. The book felt rushed and slow at the same time. I guess the other two books I just finnished have spoiled me. That author throughly described and developed his characters. You get to know them, and can easily envision the scene. I hope her other books are better.
Loved this series!! My only complaint is, it's over. I wish she would write another book, maybe about the next three.
Just finnished the second book in this addictive trilogy. I absolutely loved how she develops her charachters and you really feel like you know them, or would know them just walking down the street. I can't wait to get started on the final book. (Sad sigh) Wish there were more in the series. One little tiny word of negative. I realize that the ending of a book is traditionally the climax and all that stuff, but listening to it, you are pumped up for that final battle, and poof, it's gone. She gives such vivid detail with everything else, the loves scenes were much longer than the "battle". It could have been draged out a bit. Maybe in the next book it will.
Don't waste your money on this audio book. Go out and purchase the hard copy book instead. The narrator is Horrible!! I should have listened to the other reviews. She is breathy and monetone. I only made it 2 hours in. I can't endure her voice anymore! How can this publisher allow her to read??? I wish I could get my money back!!! OR they can find another reader for this book. Avoid her at all costs!
