  • A Queer and Pleasant Danger: A Memoir

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Kate Bornstein
    • Narrated By Alice Rosengard
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Kate Bornstein - gender theorist, performance artist, author - is set to change lives with her compelling memoir. Wickedly funny and disarmingly honest, this is Bornstein's most intimate book yet, encompassing her early childhood and adolescence, college at Brown, a life in the theater, three marriages and fatherhood, the Scientology hierarchy, transsexual life, LGBTQ politics, and life on the road as a sought-after speaker.

    "Beautiful memoir"
Would you listen to A Queer and Pleasant Danger again? Why?

Probably not. I think once is enough to get the sense of this indomitable woman's life, and there are a few parts (rape, a grisly visit to a murder scene) that were difficult to hear.

Would you recommend A Queer and Pleasant Danger to your friends? Why or why not?

Absolutely, it's worth reading. It's such a great memoir. Kate Bornstein writes with joyful relish about her life, even the hard bits (especially the hard bits). And her life encompasses so many diverse movements - the swinging sixties university theatre scene, scientology, the transgender community, the lesbian community in many different cities, queer femme theatre, activism, bdsm. She's packed a lot of life in her sixty-something years and I feel humbled that she's shared it all with us. She's honest, open, and unashamed.

Have you listened to any of Alice Rosengard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nope, but I loved this one. I actually thought it was narrated by Bornstein until the end, Rosengard puts so much into her performance.

    Any additional comments?

A lovely and unique memoir. I hope Kate's daughter reads it.

Fed up with household chores and an uncaring husband, English mother Chris Martin, 40, gets a job on the small local paper, trading one form of drudgery for another until she happens on the body of a teacher who appears to have hanged himself, but who really died of a heroin overdose. Chris and wisecracking reporter Pete Schiavo, who soon beds her, uncover blackmail, a crooked real estate deal, bribery, police corruption, and a drug connection.

What made the experience of listening to A Real Shot in the Arm the most enjoyable?

The performance by Jacqueline King. She has flawless timing and delivery. She does great character voices without making it sound like she's putting on silly voice. Her reading is so good that I often forgot I was reading an audiobook and just got sucked into the story.

Which character – as performed by Jacqueline King – was your favorite?

The main character. The book is all in first person and Jacqueline King's delivery is hilarious.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed quite a lot. Annette Room's dry humour is what elevates this book above the ordinary. This book is comedy, murder mystery and chick lit (in the best sense) all rolled into one. It's not perfect and the mystery is a bit easy to guess, but it's fun and one of those books where you get wrapped up in the story and romance and have to know what happens next.

    Any additional comments?

I'm disappointed the other books in the series aren't available on audio - hopefully Audible will rectify that!
