Heiress to the red rose of Lancaster, Margaret Beaufort never surrenders her belief that her house is the true ruler of England and that she has a great destiny before her. Her ambitions are disappointed when her sainted cousin Henry VI fails to recognize her as a kindred spirit, and she is even more dismayed when he sinks into madness.

Karin says: "Good book, unsympathetic heroine"
    "the red queen"

I have read and loved all of Philippa Gregory's other books, but not this one. The main character, Lady Margaret, was a cold, whiney, bitter woman who was obcessed with regaining the throne for her son. She was so unpleasant you had no sympathy for her or her efforts.

This New York Times best-seller is the astonishing life story of award-winning humanitarian Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A deeply respected advocate for free speech and women's rights, Hirsi Ali also lives under armed protection because of her outspoken criticism of the Islamic faith in which she was raised.

Teddy says: "A Story that Needed to be Told"
    "good story, but"
    Overall

It was an amazing story, but it spent too much time discussing Somali family relationships and political infighting for a large portion of the book.. Also, I feel I missed about 1/3 of the words because it was read by the author who speaks with a very strong accent. It would have been much easier to follow and to listen to if it had been read by a professional reader.

  • A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous Fourteenth Century

The fourteenth century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

    E. Smakman says: "Gripping, once you get into it"
    "A Distant Mirror"
    Overall

The authjor obviously did an enormous amount of research and wanted to incorporate every piece. Her parenthetical additions often caused one to lose track of the direction of the sentence. I skipped the first few chapters. as she suggested one might want to do, but even after that,it was so tiring I could only bear a few more before giving up entirely. It doesn't help that the reader's voice is quite unpleasant to listen to.

I found the exceedingly annoying music added for dramatic effect so distracting that it really ruined the book for me. At times it was so loud that it drowned out the story line.
