I had read great reviews and knew I'd like this book. Yup, sure enough did and want more. Cool world, similar to many we've encountered in other books with minor deviations. The authors influences are pretty obvious, (MTG) and easy to track, sometimes to the point that I wish he'd leave some of his personality and beliefs ( largly christian I'd guess, or maybe that's just coincidence, but everything seemed to come back around to a bible verse or belief) out and let the characters have free reign. The political voting talk, the amount of Prius talk, gas talk, moped talk... Ok ok... I drive a car that was chosen for gas mileage alone and still find it annoying! Anyways, that aside, because truly it was really minor, the story was great. The characters were fun, their powers sometimes predictable but also cool, the skin dancing was really awesome. I cant wait for another book.
I'm enjoying this series a lot. The book was great can't wait for another. I laughed so hard when she admitted to wearing a decapitated head she was studying, on top of hers when no one was there. That moment sticks out.
Narrator is good, but whoever cut it up and put 7-10 second pauses between each damn thought needs a smack to the head. It was very distracting. I thought the app shut off a couple times when she just stopped talking... Nope. Just bad editing. A lot of times you'd hear the narrator swallow in those pauses, also.
I still listened and finished it happily. I would still recommend.
I did not find any fault with the narrator, I was surprised to read another reviewer say that.
I really enjoyed this book and hope more get added soon. I'm very interested in seeing where this series might go.
This book has an interesting and scary take on Hell. We got to see some of the love and purity of heaven last book, now you get the other side. Dollar learns a lot about true desperation.
There's a few things that really bothered me about the book. The biggest one is the "interludes" to his one night with Caz. The problem is, in the other book it was quite detailed, they did this, fell asleep, woke and did this... But in this book there's ALL these conversations and sexual experiences that don't feel genuine to the original story of the night. It feels like they are just in here to justify him being in Hell and being infatuated like a 14 yr old boy. I also don't see the connection between them. I see obsession and infatuation from him, and a careless attitude at the best of times from her. She's either being bitchy or WAY to vulnerable for a hundreds of years old demon. At one point she's telling him to shut up so she can tell a story, but then doesn't want to finish it once she gets his attention and is at the last part. I was getting so annoyed with her character.
He seems to truly be in love with her beauty, but nothing about her. Their whole thing just doesn't add up for me. It detracts from an interesting story.
Another thing is the amount of time spent in hell vs what was actually accomplished. I did a lot of fading in and out of interest, and when I realized I faded, I didn't need to go back, I knew it was just stuff. Not actual needed info to progress the story.
I will probably give another book in the series a chance. I think Williams is a creative writer, but his relationship and romance writing needs some work.
This book is probably my favorite in the series, though I loved the whole series and was sad when it ended.
Mercury is a great character. His take on "being a prawn" as opposed to a pawn is hilarious. I want to say that from now on.
Very funny, very entertaining and worth reading the whole series.
This is turning out to be a great series. Stark has changed a lot, but remains much the same. He still does crazy stuff and takes huge risks, but for better reasons. It nice to see the growth of his character grow in a believable way while keeping his gritty punk edge.
As always, a couple chuckles, a couples grimaces and a couple moments of surprise. If your just seeing this series, start at the beginning. It is well worth the listen if you're into this genre.
I absolutely love the split God characters and the original Lucifer (sp?).
I really enjoyed this series. I was so hesitant to get into it because it's teen, but ultimately glad I did. I listened to all three in a row and was sad when it ended. I felt like I could continue enjoying stories in that world. I hope she revives it, even if it's with different characters.
I'll try not to put spoilers in, but I may spoil a bit. I don't like the direction Owen took in this book. He always seemed so much stronger and better put together than he ended up in this book. It was disappointing and just made me mad. Is still a good book, good villain, and Gin is awesome as always. I don't think you should skip it, just know you may be frustrated at the end.
This is a wonderful book. It's well written, well narrated and pulls you right in. This book is so thorough in all its descriptions that you feel like you are sucked back in time. You can easily imagine being in the dessert, Syria, a boat treaking to America and the little villages of New York. I was shocked how much I came to care for the golem. I wish this were a series, but I can't see anywhere that it's going to be.
As others have said Amanda butchers the accents. Ooo it was so bad at times. Like she forgot she was doing a Boston accent for a few sentences and then make up for it by slathering it on thick for a few words and then drop it again. And the Irish accents... Well, they were not Irish sounding. I was able to get use to it and can just enjoy the book, but if you're a stickler for accents, just know you've been warned!
It's a good follow-up with plenty of chuckles. I think I laughed more with installment, lots of good comebacks from Sally, D &D references, and they are still experimenting in Bill to learn what it means to be a vampire IRL.
During the first third of the book I really hoped Bill would kill Sally. By the end it's apparent how much she is needed and how she helps Bill. I look forward to more in this series.
