I had reservations about reading a prequel to the original series but the story has not been diminished in the slightest by knowing the future. I'm grateful to the author for giving us more of Royce and Hadrian. It's been a while since I've gotten this attached to characters.
Furthermore... the narrator likely the best I've heard. He manages to provide the right substance to the characters and I can pick out the characters just by the way he voices them. Superb, through and through!
Love audiobooks Duh! Also love photography, baking, my 7 cats and 4 parrots and family not necessarily in that order.
Only one book left for now. Please Michael hurry and write more after Rose and thorn. Got 12 years of their partnership right?
With almost 800 books in my library, I am an experienced listener. I appreciate a well written good story. I am pretty critical of trash.
I have repeated this review for other books in this series, but wanted to include it especially for the first book. I can't get enough of it.
I really can say it all, when I state that I have read this book four times. Also the first book. this happens to be my idea of great entertainment. The Rose and the Thorn, and Heir of Navron, were my least favorites so I only read them twice!! I LOVE the characters, and the narration takes it to my five star experience. It is often quirky when it comes to idiomatic plausibility, but I just chalk it up to daring writing and making the characters have real personality. It would be hard to create the intimacy one feels with the main characters, if we were subjected to the language that would have been appropriate for its' time. It would have distanced us from the engaging nature of Hadrian, and the powerful magnetism of Royce. I really enjoyed this series. !!!!!!!!
Excellent writer; excellent narrator. Audio Books bring the characters to you with great reality. I probably will never read another book, I love the books being read to me. Thank you.
This book has a nice flow, good character development and interesting story line. I was looking for something entertaining and this fit the bill. The reader is easy to listen to and brings the characters alive with his accents.
I listen to these types of books when I am working on art work, doing housework or exercising. The characters are easy to delve into and the story keeps you going. It adds wonderful entertainment.
Every reader tends to bring his/her own talent to each story. Finding the right reader to build the atmosphere for your storyline is very important. Tim Gerard Reynolds is exceptional at creating a wonderful listening environment.
I rarely add authors to my must read list but I believe Mr. Sullivan will be my newest edition. Thanks for all the hard work on this storyline. It has created a wonderful escape for me.
This is medieval fantasy, which I do enjoy. The first volume kept my interest because of the two main characters, Royce and Hadrian. The story is not complicated, but will hopefully become more so in the following books. The reader is very expressive and creates the characters' individual voices. Hopefully, all the books will use Reynolds as the narrator.
The book has hooked me enough to order the second volume.
Two lost am almost forgotten misfits who do extraordinary things and sometime even for the right reasons!!
There are some voice actors who do a good job, there are some who do a great job and then there are the few who do the best job. Gerard is one of those voice actor's who I actually search for before I do the author. I want to see what he has recorded and often buy based on that!
I love the characters most of all. The entire premise is entertaining, and unique, but the characters won me over.
I've literally laughed out loud multiple times, and I find myself fully invested in the characters. They seem very real, genuine, and consistent in their actions to the type of people they are written to be.
I love books. hate reviewing books because I hate reiterating what many other's have said. I hate spoiling a review.
Didn't read the print version.
DD Barant's Dying Bites. Mainly cause Hadrian is thrown into a completely new situation and meets a person whose reactions and life outlook are so completely alien from his own that coping and communicating are an adventure outside the storyline.
Riyria Revelations and the characters are the same. Wonderful.
YES. This is one of those classics like The Lord of The Rings that is so well done you will never tire of revisiting these wonderful characters.
Listening to how the characters became partners. Hearing how their friendship grew from disdain and misunderstanding to mutual respect and admiration. Their banter is classic!
Yes! He has become my favorite narrator! What I believe makes a great narrator is one who can seamlessly and effortlessly change his voice to such recognizable, individual characters. Finding the perfect tone, accent & fluency to match how the author meant the characters to be. He obviously studies the material, knows when change pitch etc. Rather than just reading and not knowing what the next few words will be or what the scene truly is about, as so many average narrators seem to do.
An incredible story of love, friendship, bravery, all tied into an amazingly thrilling adventure.
This is by far one of the best books and best Audible performances I've ever experienced. I have over 240 Audible Book titles and this ranks in the top three! Magnificent story, humorous, thrilling and unpredictable. I couldn't wait to listen every day and hated to have it end. I highly recommend starting with this book in the series and not in the order of when the books were written. This book is the true beginning of the wonderful story.
