Billy Crystal! He gave a private performance for me as "we" walked the causeway and while "we" drove to Ft. Lauderdale for my own gig. What a delight hearing his tales in his own voice! I'm new to audio books and I haven't stopped talking about how great it was to have this book read by the author himself. I believe, especially after hearing his book, it was just like him to want us to get the full meaning of each story... that might have been lost with someone else voice. I'm in the middle of listening to it for the second time and I marvel at how pleasant his voice is and the care he put into each chapter. He wanted to get it right...and I believe...well, lol, he did!
One? ONE? That's tough...Well, one was his conversation with Charles Bronson-nothing like the exact words to get the point(s) across... Then there's his 40th birthday, and when he met his wife, and lost his father and mother...
The warmth in his voice...he is talking to you one-on-one like a friend.
Both...tears all the way around...I laughed out loud, and at many points, tears were evident -which could have been embarrassing had I not had my ear buds in-and with some of the sadder moments my eyes filled with tears and made me feel the emotions those moments were meant to share.
There's not enough time or space...just listen to it...you'll fall in love with Billy if you're not already!
Billy Crystal is as entertaining as ever with the added bonus of being laugh out loud funny, insightful, inspiring and touching! Very enjoyable, don't pass this one by.
First we want to say "thank you" to Billy for writing such a poignant and entertaining story and sharing his sweetest, funniest, and most sincere memories with the listener. The fact that he did the narration was icing on the cake.
This is a beautiful audio book. I loved it. Billy's story is funny, poignant, fascinating and engaging. This book shows a man who has mastered the difficult art of comedy and has done so by tapping into everything that makes him a genuinely warm and earthy human being. I was enthralled as he shared his insights into the art-form that comedy truly is. I was spellbound by Billy's anecdotes on baseball greats, on Frank Sinatra and also the comedian who told him "always leave a tip". He shows, with great humour and graciousness (and irony) that it is true that "comedy is a very serious business." He mentions some very famous names but in such a way that the listener understands that he has made friends with legends because he is capable of being a deeply valued friend and not because they are household names. I adored this book. If you ever want to get a glimpse behind the veil, of a person who is at the top of their profession and who is so genuinely funny, particularly in spontaneous and improvised settings, this is the book for you.
Entertaining, with bits of insight about life, growing older, loss and love. The parts in front of a live audience work quite well. I would recommend it to fans and non-fans alike. Though I would say that you will enjoy it more if you have some interest and knowledge of his work.
It is wonderful to listen to him tell his life's story and the emotion comes through. A book would not compare to hearing this great man tell of the high and low points of his life.
The most memorable part to me was when he found himself on the Yankee Field in uniform and all of the thoughts that were running through his head.
Only on television and the by far exceeds any show he has been in or work he has done on television. You come away after laughs and sad moments with him and feel you know the man.
Yes, but I could not afford myself that luxury.
Best time and money I have spent in a good while.
This is the first audiobook I have ever purchased and it was one of the best decisions I've made. Mr. Crystal is sentimental yet hilarious, making me cry through both the up's and the down's. If you are a fan of his wit, crass, and uncensored humor, then you will love this book. If you have a love for family, friendship, and all things sentimental you will have a place for it as well. It does not disappoint.
Say something about yourself!
I picked this title based on the Editors' conclusion that it is one of the best listens ever. They understated the situation. Addicted to making each person he touches smile and feel better for a while, he thinks the comic mask hides the immensities of the joys and sorrows of his uniquely rich life. Do not be fooled! This one will make you laugh and cry and you may end up a fan of Billy Crystal and the NY Yankees.
Billy Crystal is a consummate artist, and the "live bits" are the best part. He is entertaining to listen to. I just wish there was more here. Some of the stories are great, although some of the opening about grandkids etc was a little precious without being personal. I wanted to know more about his father, and his relationship with some of the early Jazz greats. Oh well. There's a lot of humble bragging (lots of famous close personal friends) which got on my nerves after awhile. But I liked it, and I think you will too. It's got enough gold amidst the rubble.
