NEVER thought I would dislike a James Patterson book even with other authors but he needs to take his name off books like this. I am returning it. The narrator is good but the story is beyond boring and stupid.
The narrator was just awful! The pitch in his voice was so unbearable, I had to stop listening to the book. The storyline was awful as well. Do not waste your money or credit like I did!
A Stephen King novel or one of the Fatal books.
The pitch or variation in his voice was too high and I just couldn't bear it.
Perhaps if the narrator was replaced maybe the book will be bearable.
I wish I could get reimbursed my credit.
I have been getting into Patterson's novels in recent weeks, and gave this one a try. A few chapters in, and I am not happy. The first person narrative by "Ben" is tedious and annoying. I keep hoping it will get better, or maybe move on to another character, but probably not. I am not an expert on psychology, but whatever Ben's psychoses might be, they do not make for a pleasant narrative. Manic depressive, bipolar, paranoid schizophrenic, OCD... He seems to have many psychological problems. And perhaps that is an interesting study. But it is very difficult to listen to the audio narrative while sitting in traffic.
And then...he rides his motorcycle to Potomac Airfield, hops into HIS Cessna, taxis out while holding his internal mental debate, nearly hits another plane on the runway, before finally taking off and happily flying off to Wisconsin. I'm a pilot and have some expertise in this regard. There's at least one major problem here. Back to the psychoses, combined with whatever cocktail of medications he talks about needing to get through the day. No way on earth this guy would ever pass a medical and get his FAA ticket. I hate when novels present situations that are just plain wrong. From the way its written, the authors seem to understand aviation ("just fly the plane..."). I don't know why they would have the main character be a pilot when he clearly can't qualify. He could just as easily have hopped on a commercial flight, chartered a plane with some of his trust fund dollars, or just ridden his motorcycle worst case.
Just can't recommend this one at all.
better story, fewer twists and turns (too many coincidences makes it unbelievable).
Was this really a Patterson story -- had to remind myself that this isn't Brad Metzler.
Collins handled the principle character (Ben Casper) very well. He does a good job with the Russian characters. Sometimes in conversations, it becomes difficult to follow who is saying what.
This character (Ben) could easily lead to a series -- stories need to be stronger, less convoluted.
I stayed with this book just to hear the ending. It was as bizarre as the rest of the book.
Too many unbelievable plot twists to keep track of.
Keep it simple takes on new meaning!
I usually enjoy John Patterson novels. I can usually count on them being entertaining at least. I feel bad saying this but, this book was not only not entertaining it was just bad. The constant mentioning of movie scenes by the main character was distracting and while I guess it was supposed to show the character's OCD tendencies, it was dull and interrupted the story too much.
To make matters worse, the narration was terrible. The voice did not match the character in any way. It was very distracting. Its hard for me to put it into words but when dialogue was read every sentence came out as if the character was unsure of what he was saying.
I never got far enough to find out why the book is titled Mistress, I just know it is just not what I expected.
This is the most God-awful book I have ever bought. I am actually requesting a refund. Do yourself a favor and pass this one by.
Loved the reader. He was amazing.
I have not listened to any other books performed by him, but i just purchased another book by an author i do not know to listen to him again.
I've read better Patterson and the story was kind of boring and predictable
made a more suspenseful plot
In my opinion I could not recommend this book to anyone.
The book is long and slow moving. Narration is whiny and annoying. Too many references to the Presidents (over and over), movie characters and other non relevant topics. Waterboarding at Gitmo would be less painful.
Awful narration. What’s with the sound effects, even if I could put up with the squeaking door but police sirens, car horns, and squealing brakes? I listen to audiobooks while driving. Is anyone thinking?
Frustration and hope that it would end. If I had another book I would have never finished it.
