I have loved all the Molly Harper books, and have listened to every one of them just because of Amanda Ronconi's narration. She does such a good job with delivery of the humorous punch lines, it sometimes makes the book worth listening to. Miss Harper's books are a funny type of light mystery, that's easy to figure out, and I don't know if I would enjoy them, if I were to read them. This story really fell short for me, and after much thought, I came to the conclusion it was the voice. It was all wrong for delivering subtle jokes tucked away in the script. Kinda like what makes a good comedian, some people can tell a joke one way, and it's hilarious, the next person can kill the same punch line.I think that's what happened in this instance, cause I didn't have the usual laugh out loud moments that I have grown so accustomed to with Molly Harper. However, that is just my opinion and with the high ratings, I see that I'm in a minority here. So if you love Molly Harper's books, you may feel differently.
Amanda Ronconi makes the Molly Harper books, but this doesn't sound like her. I don't know if they did some auto-tuning or what but it's just not the same. I still love all of Molly Harper's books, but missed the Ronconi effect on the audio.
I have every Molly Harper book and am never disappointed. Another easy listen with just the right amount of humor and romance. One of the few authors that makes me laugh out loud.
I love Amanda Ronconi and the fact that she narrates all of Molly's books.
First and foremost, I LOVE Molly Harper's books. I have listened to all of them in the audiobook format and until now have never been disappointed. I am very sad to say that the narration so is poor that I find myself distracted from the great writing. Until now I have really enjoyed Amanda Ronconi's work. However, the Boston accent is so bad in this recording that at first I actually thought it was a joke and part of the storyline. The narrator will read an entire passage with no accent whatsoever and then throw in one or two of the well-known cliche Boston accent words (pahk the caah, etc.). When she does this I'm a instantly snapped out of the story and focused on the strange accent.
While I agree a series should stick with the same narrator whenever possible, if the author felt the Boston accent was too important to the story to lose (I haven't finished the book, but at this point that doesn't seem to be the case) a different narrator would have been a better choice.
I always anxiously await Molly Harper's work and will continue to do so. I hope any future new accents are fully vetted before recording begins. Harper's books deserve the best possible narration and unfortunately this one misses the mark.
Honestly, I haven't finished it yet. I am having a very hard time getting interested in the storyline and the characters. So far I'd have to say this is my least favorite.
I have thoroughly enjoyed Ms Ronconi in Molly Harper's other books, but not this one. There was a mention in the book about the main character having a mix of accents, but that couldn't explain this mess of accents. Ms Ronconi seems to frequently forget the accent(s), then remember for a few minutes and then slip back to her regular voice. I find it jarring and very distracting. I think it would have been much more successful if Ms Harper had written Nola's character with with only one accent for Ms Ronconi to deal with.
It was ridiculous how bad the editing was. I almost gave up on listening but I like the Molly Harper Amanda Ronconi team and the story was pretty good so i pushed through and the editing got better.
I've listened to every audio book from Molly Harper narrated by Amanda Ronconi that is available on Audible. Every one is laugh out loud funny, with a great story line attached as well
Brought new characters into the Hollow, and sill had the same ones interact with the new ones made for very interesting and funny story, and always a mystery too.
I never heard Amanda Ronconi do an Irish accent, and it was a little weird for me. but still liked her emotions and handling of characters.
When she finds out Jed's true nature........it really is kind of funny.
I hope that Molly Harper keeps writing about HMH. Whether about Jane or the new characters you can't go wrong with Molly Harper and Amanda Ronconi narrating.
I am having trouble listening to this- I usually LOVE this narrator but the in and out accent is sooo annoying!
Happiness is a good book!
I adore Molly Harper, I love Amanda Ronconi. With that said I think the good thing these two had going.....is OVER. Usually, Mollys books make me laugh out loud and Amanda seals the deal. I didn't love the characters, the story was weak and the narrator sucked. It was difficult to finish it as Amanda ruined it with the terrible, terrible accent. I'm shaking my head over this one. I didn't laugh once. Not even a giggle. I'm seriously depressed over this failure as I looked so forward to this book.
Say something about yourself!
This book picks up after the Jane stories and after driving mr dead. If you have read those you know what's coming.... Witty banter, smart mouth comments, and quick wit.
I swear MH wrote the leading character just to mess with poor Amanda Ronconi! How does one do a half Boston accent, meaning no R's allowed, and an Irish Brouge? I can't say it was AR's best narration because well...the accent was all over the place....like I said MH was totally messing with her! But the pace was excellent and the inflections were awesome.
This is the story of Nola, a reluctant witch born and mostly raised in Boston and when she was 14 she moved to Ireland. She has only ever wanted to be normal and has actively tried to ignore her magic for years....but fate has intervened and she is the strongest witch in her family and thus the quest to unite the families 4 lost artifacts has fallen to her....they were entrusted to Mr wayneright many years ago...so she must go to the occult bookshop in half moon hollow to find them. The bookshop now owned by Jane, a vampire, who has made it half coffee shop half book store...with almost none of what Me wayneright had in there! If she can't find her families artifacts in time her families magic will disappear!
It was fun, it was typical MH. Nice pallet cleanser from all the death and destruction I typically read. Totally worth the credit.
