I was hopeful when I downloaded this book for listening on a long summer holiday. How bad could it be, I thought, since it was written by JK Rowling under an assumed name. Harry Potter books, if not high art, were inventive and relatively well-written. I assumed that there would be some similar inventiveness in Cuckoo's Calling. The plot never really gets started, the conventions are mind-numbingly trite (a detective named "Strike" down on his luck, a dead cover girl, drug addicted boyfriend . . . . . yawn!) as to be unbelievable, and it's hard to drum up an iota of interest or concern for the characters who seem disappointed that they weren't written into a different book by a better author. I have to admit that I've slogged to mid-point and am thinking of stopping right there.
I hope she makes this a series! The story was enthralling and fun and the narrator was fabulous. I look forward to more. As we know, the author is great at writing series.
This is a great book and one I strongly suggest to readers/audible listeners who enjoy mysteries/ detectives books. The words used are vivid and the reader is quickly 'hooked'. I hope to see many more books with these main characters, Strike and Robin. The narrator as well brought to life quickly and so vividly all the characters in the book. It was truly enjoyable and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Yes, I would recommend. This is a good suspense and mystery novel. It's kept me entertained and wanting more after every chapter. Where most books you know what the ending is going to be before the actual end of the book. I didn't until the author revealed it. I wish there was a sequel.
Absolutely you will love the plot and audio!
The twists and turns of the plot.
The private detective.
No, I enjoyed every bit of it.
The poem at the start. It is extremely pretty and I had not heard it before.
From midway through, yes
Builds up well to a satisfying ending.

If you are looking for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, this isn't it. If you are looking for a perfectly constructed murder mystery with fantastic characters and great narration, download this today. I was amazed at how involved I got with the story and the very believable characters. I certainly hope we see more of them in the future. The plot is perfectly paced too.
I would never read another adult book by "Robert Galbraith"/JK Rowling. I read all of the reviews saying it was a good book so I thought I would give it a try. I listen to audiobooks all the time and found this to be one of the most boring books I have ever listened to. I listened the the complete book hoping the story line would get better, no such luck. The story and outcome were just to predictable.
I can't believe that this book was ever on the NY Times bestseller list, specially for as long as it was. I think if it had not been released who the real author was, this book would have just slipped into oblivion like many "first" time authors who should just stick to their day jobs.
Sorry I wasted a credit.
Only shows you that the author should stick to writing kids fantasy books.
I was intrigued about the author when I decied to take a chance on this book. I was worried about the celebrity aspect of the book but it was woven into the plot and character development in such a way that it worked. Cormoron and Robin were a great team with great dialogue, wit and British charm. The narrator was wonderful and I will look for other books read by him. The ending was set up for a sequel or series - I will be on the watch for more Cormoron/Robin PI mysteries from Galbraith/Rowlings.
If you love believable detective stories then buy this book. If you love intelligent detective stories then buy this book. If you love gripping, addictive detective stories then buy this book. I just hope that author Robert Galbraith follows this one up with a sequel. Hey, Robert, did you hear me?
