I wish I could bounce back like the sigma force guys. It is the same every book The guys get beat up in every chapter of the book. In this book Cotton gets shot, stabbed , blown up and beat to a pulp, not only does he not die but he pulls a McGuyver to win the day. Even though it is the same stuff every book, I still love and read everyone. I would say authors like James Rollins would be running out of believable material but what do I know. Good book worth the read.
I have tried to listen to this story three or four times, but have been unable to do so because listening to the current narrator so destroyed the experience for me. Finally forced to check out the written version from the library because I really wanted to finish the book. Sometimes a story line can be forever linked to the voice of a particular narrator and this was true of Peter Fernandez.
The book was a good fast-paced action adventure!
Gray Pierce is awesome! There were a lot of new characters in this book, so we really didn't get to hear about any one in particular.
I didn't like ANYTHING about this reader. What happened to Peter Jay Fernandez?? This guy was awful. He couldn't do accents. His Italian sounded like Vietnamese, etc. He couldn't even do an American accent for the narration. It really made the book hard to follow and I was wishing for it to be over as soon as possibly. I literally might buy the book because he ruined the experience for me.
Don't change readers, especially after the last one was spectacular.
Due to the very poor narration I do not think this book is enjoyable for anyone who is not already a Sigma Force reader.
Anything not narrated by Christian Baskous.
The narrator has no ability to mimic an Italian or Asian accent. He sounded like a comedian trying to tell a joke about a specific nationality and using stereotypical pronunciations. The previous narrator, Peter Jay Fernandez, was quite good at separating male and female characters voices and providing specific voices for each that were believable. This narrator has no ability to provide individual character voices, not even for male and female characters making it more difficult to follow the story..
The story is in line with the previous Sigma Force series but is definitely running out of steam. Without some new characters and better narration this will probably be my last read for this series. I might not even finish this one.
It is a tall order to weave the lost treasures of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan, the approach of Comet Icon (ISON?), dark energy, a wrinkle in the space-time continuum, and the end of the world into one coherent story. Rollins almost manages this feat. My biggest problem was that while the characters were engaged in mortal combat, I didn't care about them. Maybe this is because I'm new to the series. Rollins seemed to assume that I knew and loved them already. Would a bit more character development be too much for the veterans of the series?
As other reviews have noted, the narration was not good. Not only did all of the Asian voices sounded the same, they all sounded like a bad kung fu movie.
The book also suffers by trying to be both a suspense novel and a science fiction novel. It falls a little short on both counts. Good science fiction (IMHO) only breaks one law of physics. This story invents quite a bit of "physics" surrounding dark energy.
I did finish the book. I wasn't wild about the magic in the last chapter either.
I tried to like this book, gave up and tried to just finish it, but I just can't can't - Despite the bit of melodrama, pseudoscience jargons I probably could've finish the listening due to the interesting plot, however the narrator is a different issue. I'm not sure how to describe except that he likes to increase his pitch every few words for no apparent reason. - its really weird and hard to describe- its like someone constantly getting excited for no reason - I would've rather an automated computer read it to be frank.
Absolutely! This book has it all. Suspense, Intrigue, Action, Excitement, with just a tiny bit of romance thrown in.
Certainly! I could hardly wait to hear what would happen next!
The voices were spot on and I had no trouble differentiating the different characters. He definitely allowed the suspense to flow as the author intended!
Yes but I can't say it on without spoiling it for someone else. Also the end of the book. Just knowing I have to wait for the next one! Come on James write FASTER!
I will definitely be listening to this book again as life has a way of intruding and I may have missed something! :)
His intonation, timing, accents and lack of understanding of general cadence of speech is appalling. Anyone else would have been better.
I was disappointed with the change in narrator in this series. Christian Baskous can't do the accents very well and the changes he made in the character voices were not for the better
This story was too unbelievable. While I understood where he was headed, it was unrealistic to think that the US would not contact the REST OF THE WORLD if they truly believed that the earth was going to end in 4 days. Seriously.
