This has all the elements of a classic Carl Hiaasen book. All the wit, characters and twist. Unfortunately it got lost in a very bad reading.
You have to love the pipe smoking, poop throwing, mangy monkey
Mr. Johnson's timing was horrible. He would either have an extended pause without reason or he would run everything together until you were confused which character was saying what. His inflections were not appropriate either. When he did attempt to do an accent he was not constant. One time a character would have an accent and later they would not. The accents were all very much the same as well. It was a very amateurish performance. I do not blame Mr. Johnson as much as I blame the director and producer that allowed this performance to be published. They ruined the book, ripped off the reader and if this was a first experience lost Mr. Haaisen some fans.
I was angry that the people failed at thier job producing this audio book. I think I would have been laughing out loud if I had not had to pick and shift through this very poor reading.
I have gotten almost halfway through this audiobook and had to turn it off. the narrator, Arte Johnson is awful! I will watch and try to make sure I don't buy another audiobook with him as the narrator again. he has ruined this Hiassen book for me. I enjoy my audiobooks during my commute, but would rather read this book the old fashioned way.
no- see above
I couldn't listen to this - Arte Johnson's narration is so bad that you cannot concentrate on the story. He reads in such a halting style (and without appropriate pauses) that you can't follow the story.
I like Carl Hiaasen's work. If you're looking for entertaining pulp fiction, his work can fit the bill - just NOT when narrated by Arte Johnson!
Just about anyone. My best friend Steve? The guy who used to work at the radio station here in town? In all seriousness, I've enjoyed several Hiaasen books narrated by George Wilson. Was he not available? Then Lee Adams or Stephen Hoye should have gotten a call.
If you ever do this book with a different narrator, I'd like to give it a try.
Don't recommend. Read the book, avoid poor Arte.
No difference among characters. Difficult to keep straight. And the Norwegian accent was the same as the Cuban one.
A different reader.
Nothing. This is by far my worst experience with an audiobook.
Terrible accents, inability to understand how people younger than 40 actually speak, consistently wrong inflection when reading even the simplest sentences.
Anger and disappointment. I love the story but am really angry at how the reader spoiled it. Disappointed because I expect more from Audible.
Ok, ok. You were right and I should have listened. Bad Monkey is disappointing and predictable. Another story about crooks in Miami that climaxes during a hurricane. Then we have to listen to the mystery explained again...and again. No need, Mr. Hiaasen, I figured it out myself.
The narration was awful. Not only are the accents wrong, the tone and the timing is off!
Trust the bad reviews and spend your credit elsewhere.
I've listened to a lot of books by Carl Hiaasen and I have to say, this narration didn't do it for me. It sounds like Columbo reading the story. The two other narrators I've heard have been really good, but this one... it just didn't do it for me at all. It was a voice that didn't fit with the location or the characters, minus just a couple.
The story itself was good and had a unique twist.
Also loved the location on Andros playing a part.
As usual, Carl does a great job describing a place that he loves, the Keys and the Bahamas and manages to capture the threats to those places without having the book be about that.
Love the fishing stuff.
It was a bit like listening to my Dad read a book to the grandkids. Dad is an engineer, not a professional narrator. Nuff said.
Each time I try another book for Hiaasen I am disappointed. The first book I listened to was very funny and I kept expecting more of the same humor. This one is totally boring and I can not remember any of it. As it was playing in my ear, my mind wandered to other things. That's how I knew this book was not for me.
I don't think I will ever get sucked into another Hiaasen book.
Oh, is that who read the book? Obviously his performance did not impress.
Anger, sadness and disappointment were all of my reactions. Anger that I had once again I tried to listen to a Hiaasen book, sadness that I used a credit, and disappointment because it was a waste of my time and money.
