The basic story was strong, but the writing of the story was weak. The gratuitous sex was not consistent with the story line. The last 50 pages drop in a headlong rush to finish the story.
New York Best Selling book on 59 weeks...it has to be good
I am undecided as to whether I would listen to it again. The story was excellent. I'm sure I would enjoy reading it. However, I did not care for the narrator. After the first 5-10 minutes I ordinarily don't think so much about the actor reading the book because they do a good job and and simply become part of the experience. This time I found Artie Johnson distracting.
This is my first Carl Hiasen book. The story seemed similar to some of Elmore Leonard's books. Maybe Get Shorty.
The performance was not so great. Artie Johnson's voice was halting and it distracted me.
Lots of funny moments. I was not "moved" but it's not that kind of book. The chain of events during the hurricane were the best.
George Wilson? Any other reader?
I'm listening as I write this so it's hard to say. I feel sick as I love CH.
Skip the Audio Version?
Close the set?
I know it's hard when the "bar" so to speak is set so high. OK, it's over.
If you like detective, suspense and intricate plots, this is the book for you. Loved the variety of characters and the numerous twists every step of the book. It was definitely not predictable. My husband and I listened to it during a long car ride and discussed chapters between stops. Loved it!!
Any Robert Landgon (Dan Brown) novels
Voice intonation easy to listen to. Thought some of his females were a little funny but he did a great job of portraying their personalities.
This "book" was recommended by a friend who read in hardback. I'm so glad I bought the Audible version. Arte Johnson ("Ver-r-ry inteRESTing . . . but schtupid!) would make a bad book good--and this is a fun book. Highly recommend.
The monkey made it funny, the hurricane made it tense, and the other characters made it enjoyable
The monkey for sure.......
No, I have not, and I did enjoy him.
Yes, I think it might be even better
Just an overall good listen
This book was recommended to me by others that have READ the books. They loved it because of the references to Florida and the Bahamas. We live there so it is great to be able to reference names and places. As a Yacht Captain, it is most fun when locations that I have been are included. I don't have time to read so I listen. I found the story decent and fun but the narration is the worst that I have ever heard. Now, if you enjoy listening to a New York retiree sitting around a table in a retirement home and reading a book to you, it might work. Mispronounced product and location names are very annoying. But the most annoying, and boring, is the cadence and speech pattern. If you listen to Spy and Suspense narrators such as Ron McLarty, J.D. Jackson and John Shea, you know what creates interest and excitement. For me... I bought the audible book and will listen through it, but had I known, I would not have.
Loved this book. Great semi-mystery with some good twists and turns. The title character adds some great color to the book where it is involved. The characters are likable in many cases, and loathsome in others, they really are well fleshed out. The narration by Arte Johnson is very good, his voice seems to add to the humor. Great summer listen, fun and light.
Hiaasen, yes. Arte--NEVER
Use a better narrator
I couldn't stand him. Felt like he was reading to a bunch of third-graders. What a waste of money
Couldn't tell you because the narrator was so BAD that I only listened for 10 minutes just hoping he might grow on me. Didn't happen. Very dissatisfied
I wish I never bought this book
