I am a John Sandford fan. I quit reading for a while when I felt the Prey series was going downhill. After he began writing the Virgil Flowers novels, he seemed to get out of a rut and the subsequent Prey novels were once again quite good. I appreciate what he was trying to do with this one, but it was not successful.
I don't understand the loyalty and complacency when a good author puts out bad work. After yawning through 4 hours I called it quits. I was surprised by the high rating but upon reading through some reviews I saw numerous reviews by fans who gave it 4 stars while calling it "boring" and "not the usual Davenport". If you think the book is uninteresting and not well written but don't want to say that about a favorite author, no rating at all would be much better than a favorable one.
Richard Ferrone, as usual, was excellent.
Skip this book. Mr. Sanford must have been running up against a deadline because Holy Cow I could not wait until this book finished. It was corny, stupid, inconceivable and not worth my time.
The narrator was the only good thing about this book.
I would not have released the book. No editing could have helped.
I am so disappointed I can't waste any more time writing about. I need to move on!
I love the Davenport series by Sandford, but I am always puzzled that he continues to use a C grade (at best) reader when there are A+ performing artist is beyond me. But once you shake the bad reading, it is definitely worth a listen.
Say something about yourself!
I have read this entire series and there are some duds. This is not one of them. The story stretches reality. However just enjoy the ride. It was a fun listen. Nice to have a good Lucas story with his great supporting cast: Del, Kid, Virgil, Weather are well represented.
FIRST I ENJOYED BRINGING IN VIRGIL,LETTY (I REALLY LIKE HER SPUNKY ATTITUDE) WEATHER, DELL, AND THE GUYS HE WORKS WITH. THE NASTY RUN FOR THE SEAT OF SENATOR, AS DIRTYAS THE 1828 ELECTION BETWEEN JACKSON AND ADAMS A LOT OF NAME CALLING THERE.. THIS TIME CHILD PORN IS USED TO RUIN THE OPPONETS REPUTATION. YEAH WE KNOW WHO DONE IT BUT SHE IS THE SPIDER AT THE CENTER OF THIS WEB LUCAS HAS TO TEASE APART THERE IS A LITTLE SUB PLOT, A MAJOR THEFT OCCURS, THE KID ONCE PRIMO HACKER NOW A MILLIONARE ARTIST AND HIS COOKIE BAKING WIFE WHO HAD A COLORFUL LIFE PREMARRAGE.SHE WAS A CLEVER THIEF. SHE WANTS ONE MORE RUSH.
REMEMBER THE CAT IN HITCHCOKS 'TO CATCH A THIEF' SHE KINDA REMINDS OF THAT TYPE OF 2ND STORY "MAN'. THIS BOOK USES ALL KINDS OF UP TO DATE TECHNOLOGY, . I LIKED THE LITTLE CELL PHONE TRICK LAUREN USES TO FINGER THE WINNER OF THE SENATORIAL RACE. LUCAS HAS IT FIGURED OUT BUT MONEY TALKS. A SIDE TRIP TO SPEAK TO AN OLD COP FILLS LUCAS IN ON LAURENS OLD LIFE, HE HAS AN ITCH BUT I THINK HE LETS HER SLIDE LESS GRUSOME THAN OTHER PATTERSON BOOKS THIS WAS JUST PLAIN OLD FUN. ONE MORE THING , I LIKE RICHARD FERRONE'S VOICE AS DAVENPORT HE IS THE "VOICE'
Good books and peaceful days...
Not 'House of Cards' exactly, yet intelligence with specks of 3D warmth re Minnesota investigator, Lucas Davenport, who's got several million (after building up & selling a security software application - legacy - that made millions after Sept 11 attacks). Of course, he wears English shirts, Italian suits, etc., has a beautiful wife, surgeon, and a daughter too, plus the confidence of Democratic governor, who taps Lucas to spearhead a confidential quest just 10 or so days before the gov's probable reelection. But the Rep opponent, Smalls (a womanizer who's been caught too many times to deny it), becomes the target of a vicious slur campaign. The gov doesn't want to win this way, the insinuations & the further destruction of the democratic system, such that it is. So Lucas starts quietly searching around. And just when you feel like turning to another book (b/c this one seems to have gotten terribly predictable ...), everything changes. Sandford is the best I've read so far, a master at timing & tone, like no other. And if you think this is a Dems vs. Rep story, then your POV isn't wide or high enough. Maybe it's 'depth' I'm looking for, for Sandford's ultimate view (told via Lucas Davenport, that is), is that those 'elected' officials who make it to the Senate, well, they all seem to share a lack of empathy & a desire for risk: psychopaths. And not many would disagree I dare say, whatever party you support. It's one exciting read, all the way.
I've listened to several from this series. Maybe it should end. No suspense. The "funny" parts are sorely lacking . The only reason I stuck with it was to see if the ending is as bad as the rest of the book. It is....if not worse.
I wait on the edge of my seat for the release of the next Davenport book. This one was a boring, plodding disappointment. No drama; no suspense. The involvement of Kidd and his wife made no sense whatsoever. Davenport has access to plenty of experts on all aspects of computers, so why was Kidd the artist brought in? It didn't fit at all. Then I remembered that Sandford has a line of Kidd novels. So bringing in Kidd was just a marketing device to pump up some sales for the Kidd books. How insulting to loyal Davenport fans. I bought this book because I've been following Davenport for over 20 years. I was hoping for classic Davenport and instead I got this big bore with a Kidd insert. If the Kidd books are like this, no wonder they don't sell.
As another reviewer stated, it sounded like he phoned it in. Their was no mystery to the story and the characters had no personality. I've read every other "Prey" book and loved them but this one just didn't hold my interest. The narrator was great, as usual.
No, I would not recommend this book. It is so boring
I usually like his books, but this one was hard to finish
