A pleasant and moving tribute to the SOF K9's. Mike's passion is contagious. Well put together and interesting material.
Great to listen to. Mr.Rittland tells how he transforms dogs wuth a personality nobody would ever understand into dog versions of the Navy Seals. Outstanding. Thanks you for your continued service to our country.
Yes, Good read for anyone that wants a better understanding of what K9 units do and wants an insight into a vague idea of what working dogs and methods used to train them. I say vague because while the book has plenty of details there's much more to it than you would think.
Most interesting to me was talking about the training methods used to teach the dogs and how they would select them. Surprisingly some of the deployment stories weren't as good as I had expected. Maybe they just weren't written in a very exciting way. Those parts seemed a little dry.
No, It was pretty matter of fact and I wasn't really surprised by any of it. Good insights, but nothing crazy. It will give you a respect for the dog's, trainers, and handlers and what they go through and have to know.
Jumps around a little too much. The story doesn't seem to have an overall story that binds everything together. It jumps from deployments, to training, to history etc. Then kind of randomly selects one of those three to go back through in various orders.
informative and interesting
No easy day, this book provides lots of background into the training and lives of our special forces.
This was a great listen. Fascinating how much time and thought, from a very early age, goes into these four legged soldiers. Not surprising how the humans who serve with the dogs enjoy having them around. Like the author, I hope our government, and if not government then society, keeps these programs going even when we are not heavily occupied in conflict.
Interested at all in dogs? Have any dogs of your own? You will appreciate and find the funny parts of this book equally entertaining.
The way the author relayed the information. Anyone could pick up a lot of tips of tips for training their dogs from this book.
The current evolution of the training and uses of/for dogs in SOF and other military.
No. It was a little dry, almost like a school textbook but if you are interested in dogs, dog training, or special operation warfare it's worth reading.
This book read more like a manual with examples from real life. However, the stories in the last half were incredible. I'm sure there are many more incredible stories that dog handlers from other SEAL teams could add to show how that the dogs are just as elite as their handlers.
I didn't know much about how the military in general and the seals specially used dogs so this book was very enlightening. The narration was well done and the stories of the dogs riveting. I am amazed at how dedicated and loyal they are. Our country should be proud of these unsung heroes.
The review title says it all - this is a thorough and personal account of military canines, with focus on the author's specialty of modern working mil dogs which he trains. That said and in that context, this book is a knockout with a mix of great detail on the training and incidental example stories mixed in... if you go into understanding the intent, you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for something like non-stop K9 mission accounts in every paragraph, then this is not the book for you.
The content is detailed enough for any enthusiast or mil type, yet keeps moving along to new subject matter in a timely fashion with every chapter.
The performance likewise is "just right", providing enough inflection and emotion to keep it real without overacting.
