This book is divided into 3 parts. Honestly, the first part was a bit of a snore, but I liked the narrators and the story was okay, so I kept it up. Part 2 was captivating. It's a historical fiction reference to World War II, told by a prisoner and two of the Nazi Officers. I could hardly stop listening. Part 3 was good as well, with a good twist along the way.
An intriguing story that grabs your attention right from the start. I love her way of telling the story in a way that pulls you into their lives and let's you experience unimaginable things (such as what ppl experienced in the concentration camps) through both the eyes of the Germans and the Jews. She puts heart in every word and brings characters to life in a way that you will carry with you for a long time. (One note, I think the story could have been told just as well without the part involving her affair with a married man and the scenes between them. They were unnecessary scenes I thought and I could easily have skipped those. But other than that, I thought the story was perfection.)
I had to see how it ended! I'm not comfortable with some of the language, but I can understand why it was there considering the topic of the story. I'd say not appropriate for young readers!
I have mixed emotions about this book. It was well done and the narrators were good, but it didn't have a particularly satisfying ending, which is disappointing after 20+ hours. The stories jumps around between three points of time, which is sometimes hard to follow. It was interesting and held my attention for the most part. If you are interested in a story about Nazis and concentration camps, it's worth a listen, but it's not what I was expecting, nor what I would normally choose to read.
When I began reading I felt somewhat bored; but after I got into her grandmother's story and that of Joseph's I was compelled to finish the book as quickly as possible.
There were many twists and turns that I was not expecting. I actually gasped out loud.
It was not of formula style story at all. The characters intertwined with each other which made it interesting.
I wasn't a fan of the author before this book; now I am. Her writing style brings clarity and vividness to the storyline.
