Though this second volume was very good it seemed to fall short of the first. There is a great deal of unnecessary dialog that I felt was to NO point or purpose in the story! The aforementioned seemed to make the story/book a bit to looooooong.
Irrespective of the above comments I GENUINLY look FORWARD to volume three!!!
This Trilogy is a must read for anyone who enjoys American History and particularly the Civil War era. The characters are very well developed and interesting. Loved this series of books and wish it did not end at 3. Grover Gardner does an excellent job of narrating. Each character was brought to life by Grover.
Grover Gardner did an outstanding job of bringing all the characters to life.
When one of the main characters dies in the second book. In the last book when another vital character dies.
John Jakes is one of the greatest historical writers of our time. This book gives insight into the turmoil during one of our country's most shameful times. It is so well written, I cried at times. Can't wait to listen to the next one!
I am continually impressed with Jake's effort to present the war as it was from many different perspectives. Too often authors try to romanticize war, Jake's tells it as it is.
I loved both North and South books and the way the story evolves from two boys being raised in two different worlds within one country, who eventually meet at West Point and develop a friendship that will be tested repeatedly throughout their lives. How events leading up to the Civil War shape and affect each of them and every person in their lives and the different choices they make and paths they take both before and during the war weave this into an intricate and detailed telling of a volatile time in our country's history that finally reaches it's breaking point. For me, there were times when the detail was swallowing me up and I was becoming disconnected, particularly in the second volume, but these segments would pass and I was caught up once again.
While this trilogy has been around for over thirty years, it is almost erie that I chose to finally absorb their contents at a time when our country is as divided now as it was then. Will history repeat itself?
The time period was well researched and the author managed to put key characters in key places during the war.
You cannot go wrong with Grover Gardner as the narrator. Charles Main was my favorite character.
The death of Orry Main was completely unexpected and disappointing. I would like to have seen how he developed post war but it goes to show you that death can come for anyone at any time.
If your only experience with this story was the t.v. mini series you owe it to yourself to read the story, as the author intended.
One of the best historical fictions I've read.
The narration, among other things.
He's quite good with accents.
I wouldn't change the name.
A must-have for history buffs and historical fiction fans.
can't wait to start part 3. character development and historical value made this most memorable reading
