Yes. I have listened to it more than one. It is a good mystery and a great start to the series.
Adrien is a great narrator but there is something about Jake that makes you fall in love with him.
My favourite thing about Chris Patton's narration is the way he voices Jake. It is so spot on...and really adds to the character. I read the book before I listened to it and it was fun hearing how Patton interpreted the lines.
Hmmm. Well Claude was the most eccentric but Adrien is such a great narrator that it is his voice that stays with you
This whole series is very enjoyable and the narration is well done. I would highly recommend it.
All 5 of the Andrien English mystery/romances rank among my top 20 favorite audiobooks.
The second murder by the person in the skull mask was daring and well-paced.
Mr. Patton brings a clear personality to each of the characters based on the verbal cues written by Lanyon.
It took me a while but I finally 'read' my first Adrien English mystery! I'm not sure why I waited so long particularly with all the rave reviews about the series. And really, being Josh Lanyon, it was always going to be a hit!
I say I 'read' the book because I actually listened to the audio version from Audible. I do own the Kindle version but when I saw that Audible had the first three books for only $1.99 each I could not resist. It was one of the best decisions I have made - I was totally prepared to Whispersync back to the written version but found I LOVED the audio version.
The story is narrated by Chris Patton who did an absolutely fabulous job. Yes, he had a wonderful, quality story to work with but he so totally did justice to the book! His voice and style seemed to match the story and he lent a perfect voice to Adrien. His strength is his ability to perfectly capture the emotion of the story and I loved the way his inflections and tone replicated what was happening. For example, if he narrated the words "he grumbled" then the dialogue was actually grumbled. Dectective Riordan had a deeper, sexy voice and even the women were well done - Lisa, Adrien's mother being voiced fabulously!
I really enjoyed the whole story and the mystery. I liked the descriptive style of the story and loved Adrien. Maybe a touch more romance wouldn't have gone astray but with another four books to go in the series, I am sure it will get there!
murder, snark, sexuality
The series builds, with a perfect balance of murder/mystery and a tense yet developing gay romance.
Christ Patton is perfect for this series. The voice he gives each character is distinct and feels natural. He makes a perfect Adrien. Chris has a way of bringing out Adrien's sense of humor, sarcasm that I sometimes missed by reading the book too quickly.
I love the trouble finding, situational sleuth, Adrien English. His character has great dry humor, vulnerability, likeability, I feel both sympathetic and irritated by him in turn. Jake, I feel like I can understand his issues, but I still want to kick his arse out of the closet anyhow. As the first book of the series, I know this will all take time, and the series isn't one big HEA, there are plenty of realistic relationship hurdles, breakdowns, and inevitable restarts. Each story is fast paced, at times nail biting, other times very sensual, and often surprising. Nothing really stereotypical here, no chicks with dicks, no fluff, just enjoyable, murder mystery with two MC's that are like fire and gasoline. A must read, and a stand out in the m/m genre.
I haven't heard him before, but I really hope Mr. Patton does all the Adrien English series. It was outstanding--especially his characterizations of Lisa, Claude and Jake.
I love Josh Lanyon's books, and I was so excited to see the audiobook for this one (makes washing dishes and walking the dogs much less boring)!
It always takes a bit to get used to a different reader, but once I started listening I was hooked. Now I can't wait for the rest of this series!!
Great mystery romance
I really liked the narrator quite well. I also became quite smitten with Adrien and Detective Jake Riordan. Wonderful main characters.
He made the story come alive. Mr. Lanyon is an incredible writer, and Chris Patton was the icing on the cake.
When the protagonist and antagonist were in the bedroom together, it was pretty tense.
I can hardly wait to read others in the series. Josh Lanyon is one of the best m/m writers out there.
New York based author.
Adrien English, mystery bookstore owner cum amateur sleuth, is a sensational character—smart, damaged, wry, and a lot stronger than he thinks he is. Josh Lanyon’s writing is funny, rich, and consistently captivating. It takes five books to develop both Adrien’s subtle, danger-driven evolution into a man more at ease in his own skin and the company of his family and friends, and his beautifully complex relationship with big, gruff homicide detective Jake Reardon, and it’s worth every minute—especially given Chris Patton’s spot-on narration. Fatal Shadows sets the stage, but you won’t get the true Adrien English experience unless you keep going.
Both are great....
This is my first with Chris Patton but boy he nails it.....
Laughed out loud often...First, I am not gay and I only recently discovered Josh Lanyon due to a free download from Amazon...But I have about 25 books now.... and I think Adrien (with an E) English has to be one of my all time favorite series...The growth of the relationship between a man, who is so far back in the closet he would need a flashlight to find the door and a man who openly accepts who he is, is amazing... thru each book, the relationship is strong and so turbulent at times.... I just wanted to slap the shit out of both of them at different times.... love the characters, and Adrien's crazy family....I just can't say enough good things about this author.....Did I mention how much I love the characters...GREAT series.
I am Erotica/Romance writer that love to listen to books on audible in my down time. Audible keeps me sane during long drives or house cleaning days. I recommend Audible to everyone I can.
I've listened to this series at least 5 times now. It never get old. I'm love that I can never remember "who done it"! Every time I read or listen to this series I'm sitting here trying to remember. And every time I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm surprised!
