the plot, the characters, Adrien! His mother! Claude! Chris Patton!
Anytime claude spoke, Chris pulled off the pseudo accent so well!
I really liked the end.
The scene with sex scene toward the end. so creepy.
I haven't heard him before, but I really hope Mr. Patton does all the Adrien English series. It was outstanding--especially his characterizations of Lisa, Claude and Jake.
I love Josh Lanyon's books, and I was so excited to see the audiobook for this one (makes washing dishes and walking the dogs much less boring)!
It always takes a bit to get used to a different reader, but once I started listening I was hooked. Now I can't wait for the rest of this series!!
Also the audiobook narrator’s breaths were a problem.
This is mystery with some suspense. Main characters are gay men. Adrien owns a bookstore. His friends are being murdered. Adrien investigates. The story is complete with a happy ending. There is no romance, but it ends with hopefulness that Adrien and someone might be pursuing a relationship in the sequel. There are three brief sex scenes including self-pleasuring and back-door action. One of them is rape, but the victim pretends to desire it out of self preservation.
I just couldn’t get into it. I wanted it to be over. It’s all 1st person Adrien. It’s mostly his internal ponderings and analyzing. I did not care to listen to him. It might have been better in 3rd person. I want stories with intriguing characters and developing interesting relationships. That was not here. So I’m left with the guts of a mystery. Mystery lovers might like this, but I need more than a straight mystery. Another problem – the hero did stupid things at the end.
Chris Patton has a good voice and good interpretation, but his BREATHS were annoying and distracting. Some breaths were louder than others, like he was too close to the microphone at times. He needs to use a different microphone or have his breaths removed in the editing process.
Narrative mode: 1st person Adrien.
Genre: gay male mystery suspense.
Yes. I have listened to it more than one. It is a good mystery and a great start to the series.
Adrien is a great narrator but there is something about Jake that makes you fall in love with him.
My favourite thing about Chris Patton's narration is the way he voices Jake. It is so spot on...and really adds to the character. I read the book before I listened to it and it was fun hearing how Patton interpreted the lines.
Hmmm. Well Claude was the most eccentric but Adrien is such a great narrator that it is his voice that stays with you
This whole series is very enjoyable and the narration is well done. I would highly recommend it.
Adrien English wants to write mysteries not live them out, but fate has decided that he needs to be in the middle. Friends are murdered, mayhem happens and the cops think it's Adrien himself. Detective Riordan is as straight as they come........or is he? So who can Adrien trust in finding out who really killed his friends, and without getting killed himself?
All 5 of the Andrien English mystery/romances rank among my top 20 favorite audiobooks.
The second murder by the person in the skull mask was daring and well-paced.
Mr. Patton brings a clear personality to each of the characters based on the verbal cues written by Lanyon.
The narrator is phenomenal! I was occasionally frustrated with the main characters but in a fun way! The tension between them was great. The mystery was good and had some surprises!
Yes...There were frequent twists in the plot.
Yes! I love the various voices and his inflection. He does an amazing job!
Adrien, of course...I would want to knock some sense into him about Jake! LOL
Well worth the time! I've already read book two and on to book three.
This is appalling gay drivel. I put up with this pap for an hour and couldn't stand another minute. It's so awfully, awkward, painfully, pathetically, theatrically GAY!
Shame on Audible for not making that clear in their description of the 'book'.
I think gay's will like this even less. Every gay man doesn't fancy every man he ever meets and assumes they all want him. Yuk!
I'll be asking Audible for a refund.
The mystery kept me guessing and entertained.
Yes, but a small warning about the connections of the main characters.
I have not, but i did enjoy his performance.
Memories, Suggestions, and love.
