I've been reading her Royal Spyness series. And this one is yet another great work of R. Bowen. I like the characters and the narrator did a fantastic job as well. Unlike some other cozy mystery series where the author drags on and on with no meaningful developments among characters and their personality, relationships among Bowen's characters do evolve.
And I'm always amazed with the narrator's ability to adjust her voice and intonation to depict such a wide variety of people and maintain consistency over time.
I know in the current literary world, a mystery set in the days just following WWI, surrounding the ups and downs of a penniless, distant relation of the English royal family might sound a little "Ho hum", but I encourage you to give this series a chance. Start at the beginning and enjoy the wonderful narrator and the fun, often suspenseful hijinks of Georgie and her supporting cast. You won't be sorry!
At the top of the list, it has a light quick pace and was a perfect Christmas gift from Rhys Bowen and perfectly delivered by Katherine Kellgren.
The story...the characters who I view by now as "old friends"...with a few new friends sprinkled in to complete the Olde English Christmas...left me with a satisfied smile on my face and a warm holiday feeling in my heart.
Gosh beginning...middle...end it was all clever and enjoyable.
"Come back to an era gone by and experience the charm and warmth of An Olde English Christmas!"
I found this series thanks to Audible...when they offered the first Her Royal Spyness for free...and from that moment on I was Hooked!! I've listened to every book in the series with delight...it is a perfect blend of easy listening to a good storyline delivered with perfection by Katherine Kellgren who breathes life into the characters and keeps pace with the author's humor and style...a perfect pair! Thanks Audible for bringing such wonderful stories to the listners. From a satisfied, and happy Fan.
Glad to be part of the audible community and I hope that my reviews help to choose the right book and share my love of reading.
NO, the audio version is simply delightful thanks to Katherine Kellgren and her many talents. You will enjoy the audio!
Not really "another" book, but all the books in this particular series are delightful.
I have read all of the Royal Spyness books, and this narrator will not disappoint you.
Yes, of course. I wasn't on the edge of my seat or biting my fingernails, but did want to know what was going to happen. This series is not an in depth mystery book, but a mystery that keeps you wondering if you can figure out the guilty person before the narrator will tell you. But the characters become so familiar to you, and they are seem to leap off the "pages", and you will many a times laugh out loud, I certainly did.
Sometimes, the characters and the stories of this whole series became predictable, but I would still recommend getting the books!! Enjoy them!
I love clean books of all sorts. Love mysteries, fantasies epic to kids stories, fairy tales, romances, humor, and historical fiction
I love the Royal Spyness Series. This one was right in the vein with the others. It was great fun and I always laugh when I read these books. Katherine Kellgrin is the perfect narrator. I love her voices and accents. I think she does a pretty great job altogether. The characters are all great. I enjoy her Georgie's mother, father and her maid Queenie and Georgie herself. . They make quite an interesting cast. I missed Belinda a little in this book, but the Crazy Swamp lady and the village idiot make up for that a bit. Of course, Darcy makes a stunning appearance as well.
I couldn't wait to read it when my credits came in. It was over all too soon.
Good Solid fun!! Might have to start back through the series and then listen again!
mmmmmm sounds like lovely fun!
I have been enjoying Rhys Bowen's series and was delighted there is a new Christmas volume.
I was especially impressed that it really had to do with Christmas and Christmas is central to the story. I have noticed that many authors write a "holiday" book that could stand on its own without any Christmas theme, its just that the mystery takes place around Christmas, but "12 Clues" needs the holidays to hang together.
Further, the story itself, as well as the narrator, are excellent and quite enjoyable. I have listened to maybe 20 Christmas audibles this you and !2 Clues is the most memorable.
Maybe my review is skewed because it's hard to get into the Christmas spirit when it's July in Florida (average temp for this week is 92, so talk of snow is irritating). However, I did enjoy that this one finally gets moving on the Darcy angle, not far enough, but progress is good. It's a safe read if you're already a fan.
Retired CFO, Army wife, Mom of five, Grandma of six, two sons who served in combat, love to read books that reflect my values and faith, love mysteries, historical, military stories, and books that don't waste my time . . . if it doesn't have an ending that was worth the wait, I'm not a happy camper.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book, especially the well done accents of the well-to-do and the common folks of England. It was a good mystery, but the interactions between the characters are what made the book stand out for me. Some funny, some strange and some very sweet.
Another fun spoof in the Royal Spyness series. Georgie and most of her familiar friends gather for an old fashioned English Christmas with all the trimmings. What she doesn't know is that a killer is using the carol about the Twelve Days Of Christmas to make a literal killing, murdering a person each day (almost) to fit the pattern. More deaths than in the rest of the series, as the need to fit the pattern, but I would love to be able to spend a Christmas like Georgie and Darcy do, without the murders!'
If you have not read (or heard) the earlier books in this series, go back to the first, Her Royal Spyness, and start off right. But if you have read or heard some or all of the earlier books and enjoyed them and are in the mood for some holiday related murder, start to listen at once. You will enjoy.
As always, Kathleen does a great job reading this book and her reading adds to the enjoyment.
This is a great, lightweight audiobook.......There's the collection of unrelated guests at a traditional country Christmas in a quaint little English village -- a perfect place for fun, romance, mystery, and murder. Katherine Kellgren again does a great job voicing all the characters and bringing them to life, and there's enough familiar in the story to keep regulars happy and enough different to keep it from being too familiar and boring. I think Rhys Bowen struck the perfect chord on this one.
