Jim butcher managed to make this story good even after he kind of jumped the shark with having harry killed and wondering around as a ghost during the last book. overall it is a good book and getting back to what we all love about the dresden files. I look forward to the next chapter.
The fourteenth book in the Dresden Files series lacks only one thing to make it a six-star worthy book, and that is the sequel ready to go! James Marsters once again is at his best in the reading of this masterpiece of modern alternative/supernatural mystery. His ability to do the voice acting is spot on, as is his clear, crisp diction couples with the right inflection. It is obvious to anyone listening that Mr Marsters has, unlike so many other narrators for Audible book, not only read the book ahead of time, but is a fan as well. Jim Butcher has been my favorite modern (1980-present) author for some time, and his Dresden Files novels continue to be fantastic for their gritty realism of the characters, his continued adherence to the "laws of magic" he has set down, and for the fast pace at which the action happens. I have now read the book once and listened through twice, and it is still a book worth reading and listening to again. A true delight for any fan.
One of his best! The reader definitely needs to have read the rest of the series to understand all the references to previous adventures, though.
i loved that the series was not done. i was looking for another comparable book and i did not find one so i was so happy to see Dresden was not done.
Dresden ismy favorite character. His sence of humour, honour, and skill level has always drawn me in and kept me interested.. i also am in love with his dog and wished they reallly existed.
James is really masterful at entertaining the listeners so i can not choose
i was so happy thst there was another book that i took awhile to even decide anything about it. i am so happy that Dresden will continue to amuse and confound me that i of course have to llisten at one sitting only wishing that there is more
Top 20 book. One of butchers best.
Friends finding out Harry alive
For me, he brings Harry Dresden to life.
I'm waiting to get locked up for laughing out loud because of Jim's humor especially in crowded rooms with headphones on. People just stare.
Jim butcher has remained a favorite author of mine. I enjoy his humor and another author, Mark Tufo, very much.
I spent my New Years Eve/Day listening to Cold Days. Pretty much 16 hours straight. Time well worth it. This is undoubtably not only my favorite book of the series (sorry Changes) - it's is my favorite book of the year.
Everything I love about Harry Dresden can be found in this book. And the surprises/plot twists - i've never gasped so much in my reading life. I mean holy crap. It's one thing for a book to be great. It's one thing for a series to be excellent. But for the main character/storyline to still be this damn thrilling & thought-provoking 14 books in is a major achievement.
What got me the most is that there have been characters who I've never liked - and by the end of this book, I not only understood but liked & respect by the end of this book.
I will not start breaking this apart. What I will say is that I'm very very very VERY excited to see what is coming next. And hope that it's already halfway finished cuz I really don't want to wait a year for the next one - or gulp - even longer.Long live Harry effing Dresden!!!!
It's also fantastic to have James Marsters back. Love his narration!
I love all of the Dresden books (Ghost Story with that other narrator had me feeling a sense of grief and loss for the *real* Dresden, which in hindsight, added to the books, but almost made me give up Audible completely!)
I haven't written any reviews yet, but I just wanted the producers to know to KEEP MARSTERS AS DRESDEN!!!!!!!!
From the first word uttered to the last, I was completely enthralled and absorbed. Now the only problem is finding the patience to wait for the next book.
Keep it coming!
It is always hard to answer this question for a Jim Butcher book because he gives so much attention to every character in his novels but in Cold Days I loved watching Molly’s growth and seeing how Dresden changes his relationship to her in response.
Always wonderful, Marsters reading is easy to listen to. He is the voice of Dresden for me.
Yes, if you like books 1-12 then you will LOVE Cold Days
Harry as Winter Knight is quite fun.
On par with narration in books 1-12
Just wow, incredible listen.
We see a lot of old characters in new ways, as well as a fierce new little fairy in fishhook armor. Mab's ruthlessness and viciousness takes a vivid turn and yet at the end Harry defies her despite being her vassal. We see Mac in a new light and with new mysteries. Harry must deal with new and disturbing impulses which are probably brought on by the mantle of the Winter Knight. We come to understand the purpose of Demonreach, and we see it both as a place and a character. The Winter Lady shows incredible vulgarity and murderous intent, and as a result Harry winds up with friends in the Winter Court. Harry's mother's silver pentacle is returned to him, and he is gifted with a new leather coat, so we have the feeling we're getting back to the old Harry again. Harry and Karrin Murphy share a tender moment, and at the very end we still have a lot of mysteries but not one of those painful cliffhangers we've seen before in the Dresden Files series.
James Marsters is a great narrator as always, and the book is amazing. What's not to like?
