If you're looking for a technically-accurate procedural novel, this isn't it. That being said, I actually enjoyed this book. I have read countless legal and crime thrillers and I've always been a sucker for the guy who beats the system. Yes there are plot points that don't quite add up, but the spirit of the plot is very good. Generally a book doesn't appeal to me because it is hyper accurate. The entire exercise is meant as an escape. Escape is exactly what I did with this book.
Maybe I'm slow, but I allowed the story to unfold without spending a lot of effort to figure it out or poke holes. This approach greatly enhanced my enjoyment. I had fun listening to this book and at no point did it feel like a chore. It held my interest throughout the story.
The best test for a book in my opinion is whether or not I find myself sitting in the driveway finishing a chapter while my family looks out wondering why I haven't turned off the car. When this happens I consider it a good book. I wasted about half a tank of gas finishing chapters on this book.
It's obviously not for everyone. The other review referencing The Firm is accurate. This lacks the pure energy and intensity of that type of book. The Racketeer is certainly different, but good on it's own.
The performance gets five stars. I am very picky when it comes to the voice acting, music, sound and production. This book allowed me to get into the movie in my head which tells me it was well done.
I will continue to buy Grisham and will definitely buy more from JD Jackson. Good luck and remember, this hobby is supposed to be fun.
Not as good as Grisham's other books. Started out good, but lost me as it progressed. Narrator was good though
I'm glad I got to the end of this book to see what the whole mystery/secret was. However, listening to all but the end of the book felt like I was sitting in a waiting room waiting for someone in another room to put together a jigsaw puzzle. Narration was fair but a little too slow. The mispronunciation of the island of Antigua drove me a little crazy. It is pronounced An-TEE-ga, not gwa at the end.
Say something about yourself!
So glad I downloaded this. I just couldn't put it down once I got started. Just when I thought I had it figured out, there were twists and turns that made it so well worth the listen. The last few Grisham's were good just not great. The Racketeer is great!! J.D. Jackson will be on my favorite reader list - he did a superb job.
Grisham knows his legal territory very well, so right off the bat you are drawn into the world he creates. What the most intriguing surprise is that he (Grisham) takes off in a slightly more free-form plot, with no research (according to him), that gives the overall story an intriguing journey to amble along on.
The story was engaging and suspenseful. Loved that it kept you guessing as to what will happen next.
This was my first John Grisham novel and I absolutely loved it! The down side is I read it so fast that I'm too anxious to wait for my next credit that is due in a week. I'm ready to listen to more Grisham.
THe reason I did not give the performance 5 stars is because at the beginning the narrator was speaking a little to slow for my taste but it got better and he did a great job with the different accents.
Throughout the first half of this audio book I thought the plot lagged and I wondered if I would wind up enjoying the outcome. Things picked up significantly in the second half and the overall plot is one of the best I've read/listened to in a long time.
I listened to this book on my way to and from work ... a 40-minute drive each way. I couldn't get enough! A fascinating tale. Gripping. Very believable. The interplay of the characters was fascinating. Thank you.
J.D. Jackson did an OUTSTANDING job narrating. Very believable.
Reader had a wonderful voice and story kept me on the edge of my seat
Out smarting of the FBI.
