The only reason I kept on with this book is that I was doing outside labor and it was better than nothing. I also hate to delete a book I have paid for so I kept on. Then came the actual story.
Why this author had to drag out the first 2/3rds I don't know. Could I say it was worth the time to get to the last 1/3rd? I'm not sure, but it was fascinating. I had no idea of the ending and the ending was so.....great.
Obviously, my review is mixed. Am I glad I read this book? Yes I am. Would I read another by this author? I think I would try one more.
As I got closer to the end, it was more and more interesting. I didn't want to turn it off and I wasn't disappointed.
I rated the story itself as a 4 star but know you are in for a long and draggy beginning and middle.
There is a mystery but it's also the story of multiple generations, loss of family, loss of love, survival and seeing the multifaceted nature of each person. I loved the character development and the view of life in London amidst the constant blitz.
This tale is as entrancing as "A Hundred Years of Solitude" It comes together wonderfully and always kept me wondering.
Absolutely! I enjoyed this audio so much! Twists and turns and tons of love.
the twist at the end!
highly recommend this book!
I absolutely connected with the characters and the muti-generational perspectives. I've been and had that teenager and now have been and had that older adult.
I loved the clearly enunciated reading with a delicious Irish lilt. Though a bit lengthy, this book sometimes kept me up listening till 4:00 a'm.! The surprises didn't stop comin'. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in war, love and loss, and above all the endurance of the human spirit.
This could be my new fav author. I love all she offers...historical fiction, mystery, depth, story length & family/secret themes. This was just what I wanted to read. It is true to book jacket description. Although I figured out the ending quite a while back, I was thrilled that it came to be. I was worried the ending would be different than I thought it should be. That being said, I wasn't bored. This was a satisfying read. I have already started another of her novels.
Loved the ending, but felt like I'd been listening to it for 2 years. Beautiful narration which is what kept me coming back to it. I did not figure out the secret, which was awesome....but I didn't enjoy the amount of story it took to get there.
An intriguing mystery that really delivers a lot of surprises you won't see coming. The narrator was easy to listen to for 23+ hours. Definitely worth the time.
