"Not DeMille's best work"
Absolutely. DeMille is normally a master storyteller. I eagerly snap up all his books, but this one seemed simplistic, overly convoluted, and, in the end, disappointing.
Absolutely Not.
John Cory is still my favorite. Smart and funny, but serious when necessary. Brick can be a master storyteller!
It's not what I would have cut from "The Panther," but more what I would have added. More character development of the main antagonist, The Panther, would definitely have fleshed out the book better. "The Lion's Game" did a much better job of developing the Lion, and most of the other DeMille books do a good job of drawing me into the lives of the characters - good and malevolent.
""Finally, Kate said,"John, that's enough."""
I'm surprised she didn't aim a gun at him and demand a straight answer.
Two thirds of this book consists of John Corey's smart-ass repartee and one third is action. But that action is exciting and worth the wait.
This story scares me because it makes me realize that our government is going to lose this on-going conflict because it insists our people play fair and by the rules but our enemies do not and will not do the same. We are fighting people who fervently and religiously believe we are evil.
"Enjoyable listen"
Loved the character of John Correy. Sarcastic and cynical. DeMille produces a great read.
actually laughed out loud during certain scenes.
Demille delivers
"Felt like I was in Yemen"
The different voices and style of performance was wonderful even with all the Arabic names I could easily follow the plot.
yes - I loved the comments from the story teller.
no
No idea on this one
It was a fabulous read.
"Ended before it started."
Plot re-write. Resolution of the "good guy" conflict at the end was a true copout. Resolving that on home turf could have truly added interesting political twists and turns and partially rescued the story.
Normally lots of action and interplay but this time a dud.
Brick is a great reader and he really "gets" each character.
Disappointment- I usually don't write reviews but I needed to warn others on this one. I was waiting for the action to really start- thought this was act 1 of 2 but Brick just went into acknowledgements and thank yous.
"Great story, only made greater by Mr. Scott Brick"
Unique combination of a spy thriller combined with first rate humor. Scott Brick delivers an excellent narration to a very interesting story with enough plot twists to make you avoid pushing he stop/pause button.
Unexpected twists and plan changes.
John's jokes & sarcasm - priceless. Actually made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions... no spy book has ever done so before.
Yemen, Bedouin & Excrement Shaft - a Spy Thriller
Great book, great narration, my first John Corey novel, definitely not my last.
"Long Cat Tale"
DeMille is able to create a world you have never been to before, introduce you to it and it's people and cause you to love it! Not This Time. This cat was too big. Cut a wee bit of it off in Part I. Take away lots of blubber.. opps... blather in Part II and now you are to the end of the tale. Every cat knows it must have a nice wave goodby. Here you barely get a bob. The Lion books were absolutely fantastic. I was hoping for another 'I cant wait to get back to hear if ______, but not this time and I was very dissappointed. In The Lion books John's smart mouth was most enjoyable and his barbs well placed. In The Panther I felt that was mainly all I got and nothing of the other characters. Scott, big fan of your work! Here, you did not have much to work with. Readers, dont give up on Mr. DeMille but do get the abridged verison of this one .PS: Normally. I would not say buy abridged!
I am a person that tries and get through 1 book a week if possible. I am Dyslexic so this is really the only way I can get through a book. I have listened to more book in a year than I read my first 20 years of my life. I found the joy of audio books in the early 2000 and have been a audible customer since 2000 or 2001. I have over 490 books in 2 different accounts and listened to 90%.
"Nelson does it again"
Yes, If you like the previous John books this is another great one.
John is always my favorite character.
Scott is one of the best readers int the business. I even do searches just for him to find new books to listen too.
When they were set up for death once again by the CIA and getting through it as a group.
The only problem I have with this book is how it was ended. I think Nelson could of spent another 2 or 3 chapters to close out the business with Tom and the CIA. I also would of liked to seen Buck getting punched in the face.
"Great as always"
I love John Corey the hero, and Scott Brick the narrator is the best. I sincerely hope DeMille continues writing for the series, keep John alive!
Pudge450
"Right!"
Sure. Both are talented.
Sure. I have a couple in the ipod waiting.
Scott is always at the top of his game. My favorite narrator.
NO. Slow moving. Excessive wisecracks. Waaaaaaaay to many "Right!" responses from Cory.
Please make Cory a more likable character. His number one response to every statement/thought/situation is "Right!". So sick of hearing that. Such a smart-a$$ he is intolerable.
