The original virals from The Passage are still making the rounds a century later with a type of human, Red Eyes, helping them. These Red Eyes, aka collaborators shortened to Cols are a special type of depravity. The sacrifice their own species for snippets of power.
In Texas, the Expeditionary is about run out of wind for the hunt and destroy missions. The government there feels that it is almost more important to keep the fossil fuel sources protected than to go on the offensive against the remainder of the Twelve. There are some dissenters however. Survivors of The Colony, Amy the ageless hybrid, Alicia Denardio – protégé of Col. Coffey and others. They know there can be no end until patient zero and the eleven other original virals are ended.
Book 2 is quite a bit more raw than the Passage in some respects but you knew it would have to be. The blending of fiction and science to paint this post-vampire-apocalypse North American quarantine zone is top notch world building. One detractor for me was the author trying to juggle so many story-lines at once that the reader, or listener, can easily become confused in time and place.

Homeschooler and more
Love, family, mortality, evil, courage. generosity, are themes woven together in this epic tale of survival. Loved it.
Extraordinary storytelling and writing. The author created characters of realistic depth, complete with the fallible human parts to balance the good that you feel them yearning to possess.
The narrator is amazingly gifted as a story teller. The best books can be ruined by a bad reader, but when the best books are read by the best readers, then magic happens.
That's what you'll discover here.
I have read and listen to these books and I just want to start over and listen again, the only thing I'm disappointed with is how long it takes him to write these books! And I sure hope Scott Brick is the narrator he is just awesome, I wish I could have him permanently narrate my whole life in my head😆
The Passage and The Twelve provide a great 1 - 2 punch, I only hope the third one ( City of Mirrors ) can provide the knockout punch it deserves. It will have to be great to equal the first two.
Justin Cronin & Scott Brick can take you on an adventure that will sweep you thru every emotion on the scale. I have always loved epics like pillars of the earth, the first Shanara books starting with running with the demon thru the black staff were my favorite & Sarum, as well as the stand & swan song always loved my dystopia/zombie post apocalypse. Well folks the master has entered the building because every single thing about these books is epic. I'm going to go insane until city of mirrors
If you enjoy apocalyptic novels, you will really enjoy this series!
2nd-half of book AMAZING!
