Other reviews indicated this book was way more than a young adult book which is why I went for it. While I think it was certainly an entertaining listen, I still felt the young adult vibe. Teenagers tend to like stories about the post-apocalyptic world, and this one certainly delivered. I, not being a teenager, discovered that I'm a little weary of apocalyptic story-lines. Also, as a mom of teenagers I just couldn't get over how self-sufficient these kids were. It kind of made me laugh. A lot 16 year-olds in a real world apocalypse would probably come close to starving just because they couldn't figure out how to use a manual can opener -- just saying! Nevertheless, the paranormal, post-apocalyptic theme is hot, hot, hot right now with teens and this one delivers a better story than most. If you're a young adult and you like these themes, you'll like, no, probably love this book. The pacing of the plot was a little slow initially but picked up big time just before my patience started to thin. It stayed on fire until very close to the end until I thought there was an odd jump forward in time that felt a little, I don't know, incomplete, gimmicky, rushed? A small criticism overall. Finally, the narrators were awesome. Both totally made the characters come to life and made a really good book even better. I don't know that I'll continue with the series, but I'll certainly give it to my daughter whom I know will love it.
Big fan of previous Cole books, however I was tentative to spend the bucks on a YA novel. Love the sizzle & steaminess of the Immortal Series, totally erotic. It worried me the author's departure into the Young Adult rating would kill the magic so to speak. However, the attraction & anticipation of the characters is well-placed and relatable. Poison Princess kick starts pretty quickly, and constantly has interesting new developments. Thanks to the 'Cajun', 'bad boy' hunk Jackson... this dystopian world is one any gal would gladly inhabit. Eve is young, beautiful, frustrating, naive' and faceted with a depth that other YA novels lacked. The narration was good but in the beginning chapters I was disappointed and didn't like the way Jackson's voice was portrayed by the narrator. However, it grew on me but that is probably a bigger credit to the author!
I really, really liked how the whole story came together so neatly in the end. It was great and I can't wait for the next one!
Loved Jackson Deveaux. There's something really hot about that Cajun.
If this book isn't made into a movie, we are completely missing out!
I can't wait for the next one! Totally worth the credit. Totally worth the time. Totally worth all the stuff I didn't do because I just could not stop listening!
A bit slow to start but great ending. Arthur was way to creepy :S I was listening to his lines right before bed and had trouble going to sleep. I don't think i could re-listen to it.
Great book. I would recommend. I did not want to stop listening. I am an adult but enjoy the young adult books (hunger games, twlight etc.) I would put this series in the category with those!
This book is wonderfully written, unbelievably creative, amazingly narrated, and overall breathtaking. From just the first few pages I was hooked. I didn't want to even pause it to go to bed. I just finished it and already I am craving the rest of this enticing series. I have never read or listened to anything like it. The story plot and characters are so unique and Kresley Cole not only makes the characters like able but also makes you so entranced by them that you feel like you truly know them and sympathize with them on a deep level. There is danger, fantasy, tarot, adventure, and love that makes this book a must read for any young adult. Just from this first book it has already found its way in my top 3 books of all time and that's saying a lot. Nothing is predictable. The end is the beginning and if you want to know how you must get this book.
Evi of course but jack is also right up there. Characters you will fall in love with and yearn to know more about.
Evi since she narrated the book beautifully though the rid bits that Keith did was wonderful and well spoke.
Why change the tag line the book already has one suites to the book perfectly. The end is the beginning.
I really enjoyed this book, one of Kresley Cole's best stories. Though the novel is clearly made for teens, it can be enjoyed by adults, since it has a truely unique storyline. The book has been compared to Twilight, but the world that Kresley Cole has created is so different that it isn't much like Twilight not even with the romance. It's ramped up a couple degrees with the physical chemistry between the lead characters, along with much more sinister villans, but apt to the story in my oppinion. I do think Jackson is a bit too hard on Evi at times, but I can see where the author is going with it. The book starts out with the villan doing the narating in the prologue, which makes for good intrigue, though I did find the start of the book somewhat slow. But it picks up and then doesn't falter much after that, so if you get a little board with the teenage stuff just hang in there a little longer. The narators did an excellant job. All and all I can't say anything but good for this book, and I can't wait for the next in the series.
YES!!! It is fan-tabu-lous. I first read the e-book, then imediately bought the audiobook...which was even better.
This is an apocalyptic book -- not to be confused with post-apocalyptic/dystopian--it had that, but it was so much more too. Perhaps... "Alice in Zombieland" and "Death and the Girl next door", just in the fact that they are all crossover books from fantastic adult fantasy writters, but neither were as good.
I feel like I'm in See's Candy and I only have 50 cents... Do I have to pick?
swoon a bit.
A--freaking--mazing. Two nights of staying up well past midnight falling asleep with kindle in hand, then I immediately bought this audiobook version and started over again.
Refreshingly original. Great story. Perfect ending.
Warning: the only thing YA about his book is the characters ages. It's gore-ific.
The book keeps you guessing and is a great adventure! Emma Galvin brings this book to life! I Can't wait for the sequel!!
As Evie discovers who she is, her nightmares of the witch become graffic and you just can't stop listening......I was awake all night, because I couldn't stop listening!!
Emma Galvin is definately my favorite narrator. In fact, I discovered this book while searching for her work. She brings characters to life and the emotion she delivers, sucks you in and you become part of her story. I will listen to anything that she narrates!!! Emma Galvin is a talented and exciting narrator. Keith Nobbs also brings to life, the creepiest of characters......amazing! His work is worth the listen!!
