once I got through the first hour of the narrator's droning on and on, I was excited to finally start the book. I've read mixed reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. It never really got much better. there's no explanation of O, her love, no reason for such devotion to Rene. Through out the book of found myself saying WHY??? What did he do to earn this? There was no answer, and he turns out to be a jerk.
the ending was horrible, no reason or explanation. The love O believes she shares is an illusion, because you don't just dump on someone you love. For a minute I was fooled in to believing Sir Stephen loved her, but the ending proved me wrong. I think I might have better enjoyed this book if I had read it myself, instead of as an audio book.
It was - if you are interested in the genre.
There are better French erotica writers.
I thought the narrator had a very nice voice for the part.
Oh my - in my fantasy life it would star Juliette Binoche. I'm not holding my breath.
Again, it's a classic if you are into the genre. If not, skip it.
I had heard about this book all my life but never knew exactly how much it would make my ski. Crawl until I heard it! I couldn't stop listening to it though. How much torture and violation can person take?
After all the hype I've heard about it over the years, I expected more. It was controvertial in its time, but now it is old hat
Authentic passionate story. Quite a perspective from which to view life. A very different culture. Strangely seductuve.
I probably would
The story in its self is just sad. While I didnt hate the book there is nothing erotic about the story.
nothing? She did fine.
It was nice to have a break to absorb the depth of what was happening.
We are all prisons of our own devise...
I read this a long time ago and was intrigued by the book. Lost the book and was thrilled to find it as an audible book. Listened to the book once so far, but will listen again. Still hard for me to understand what people will do to others. Lambs to the slaughter.
Nurse, mom, loved to read....but now I love to listen. When I retire I hope to hear waves crashing in 1 ear and audible in the other!
Remember this is "classic literature", I am more of a modern story listener myself, I did not enjoy this.
Characters seemed completely lacking of any sort of feeling. There was no connection between any of them which was obviously the intent of the author but it didn't evoke any feelings from me as the reader. I wanted to read it because of the controversy surrounding it and I'm glad I did. It was by far one of my least favorites however.
