Live by Night is the top of the list. I have read a few Dennis Lehane books before and loved them and Live by Night did not disappoint.
I love the prohibition era and bad guy that you can't help but love.
I don't usually listen to books more than once but I will be listening to this one again. It was excellent. I couldn't stop listening. The characters were very well developed and Lehane really knows how to bring the characters to life. The narration was great too - the story flowed very well.
An easy listen - not much heavy thinking involved - and the narrator did a terrific job capturing the characters and their varied accents. The book itself was a rather cliched collection of gangster-type characters and adventures, but the story was entertaining and easy to follow. Was glad to have a respite from the sometimes-heavier tone of Lehane's books, but still forgot about this one pretty much immediately after I'd finished it, unlike his other books, which lingered with me for awhile.
The story, the characters, the period detail
On the boat with Albert White
Voices subtle, but the protagonist was easily identifiable.
The relationship between Joe and his father.
I just really liked Joe. I would want to be his friend if he were real. He wanted to be a good guy. I could relate to each character to some degree. It was just a really well written and narrated story.
Joe. He was so loyal and likable. I liked Dion too, even though the was a rat.
Yes. He does the Bernie and Chet mysteries. He is absolutely the voice of Chet, in a great way. His performance was outstanding on book. He's up there with Dick Hill.
Outlaw, not a gangster.
It was a great listen. I immediately looked for another Lehane book to listen to that wasnt a movie...
Great historical detail of the '20s and '30s with an intriguing story line. The author's insight into human nature is impressive.
The book was thrilling and the subject matter both mysterious and exciting.
Great performance. His use of dialect was impressive.
I found the book suspenseful.
This is a great story with historical facts and great details. With the colorful descriptions and action plot, I definitely recommend it!
Addicted to Audible!
I listened to the first half of the book and it kept my interest but the second half was boring and dragged and at that point I didn't care which awful, stereotypical character lived or died. There was nothing in any of the characters that made them redeemable. I had to stop listening, couldnt stand any more torture. I disagree with those who said the reader was bad, I think he did a decent job. I believe the problem with this audio was the poor storyline, bad character development and basically that it was a book unworthy of Dennis Lehane who is one of my favorites!
A super storyline !!!
Easily JOE COUGHLIN .....
Normal average screw up makes REAL GOOD !!!! Finally makes it and WHAM .... All gone !!!
I love a good story...any kind of story.
No...I never listen to books twice. Too many new books to listen to.
