What can I say about Tolkien? Talk about describing the scene! I own and have read the books and I listen to the audio book several times a week. One of the best books written.
Listened to this for the first time, years after reading it and of course after watching the movies and was reminded that I grew out of it's demographic. The songs were a bit much and I feel like the D&D crowd abandoned Tolkiens view of elves. So many songs v.v. Oh, and lastly I feel like the narrator at times might have been singing it like he would sing it and not like the characters he was telling were, noticed it outright at the end of the elves song with the wine barrels... Still good obviously, just, need to go reread the trilogy on here.
I admit up front that I have loved this book for a long while, so my review is rather biased.
This is my favorite audio book to listen to when I'm in need of re-listening to a favorite. I'm not thrilled with the narrator and how he makes some of the characters sound, and the singing parts are a bit painful. Also the voice is very slow paced, yet not enough pause between sentences or momentous events. However I'm extremely picky and think this narrator is still better than many.
If you haven't already read the story I'm not sure how to explain it to you. It's more lighthearted than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, much less serious in many ways. It's the book equivalent of comfort food.
Words Before God, Gold, and Glory!
You know the story, but here is a performance filled with what seems like a thousand voices, and all of them are rich in personality and character!
buy junk yo
This story is so good and the narration is top notch!
We have a performer here!
Way better than the movie.
Emotionally intriquing, fantastically detailed, and wonderfully read. Rob Inglis does a fine job narrating this absolute classic and I daresay not many could have done better. it is also my view that Mr. Inglis has a splendid ear for tune as each song carries with it a weight appropriate for the chapter and situation.
Very well done and highly recommended.
