Riveting, Action, Monsters.
Too many and I am not going to give any spoilers.
I have listened to the entire Monster Hunters International series and Oliver has done a great job bringing the characters to life. It seems that with every book in the series he is more comfortable with the characters and really makes you visualize them as full and complete people. He really brings out the humor and horror of Larry's writing.
The latest riveting story in one of the greatest epic action series of all time.
I don't write many reviews but I feel it would be a travesty if I didn't give accolades to this book. Larry has created a great series with the Monster Hunters International books. The first book in the series took of running with a new look at monsters and how they are kept in check by the hunters of the world. Each book has added many new layers to the MHI team. This book is, again, adding so much more to this series with a well spun web of deceit, action, drama, humor and just flat out one heck of a ride. Oliver does an amazing job as well bringing these characters to life. Larry and Oliver make the most entertaining 16+ hours of listening pleasure that you could possibly have. I can't wait until the next book in the MHI series comes out.
I am a costume designer who listens to books at work. Isn't that a great job?! Discovered the concept way back when it was "books on tape", then cd, and now my iphone. the only down side is that I get upset when actors interupt my stories! Oops!
In the top five with the Grimnoir, Dresden files, President's Vampire, and Iron Druid. Hmmmm, seeing a theme emerging. Oh, and Cabin Pressure for comic relief.
The voices are perfect. Distinctive and fit the personalities.
Yes. I was listening at work and got way too grouchy when people interupted me. Oops.
Can't wait for book 5! Every time a new book comes out, I revisit the whole series in order. What a treat!
I have already listened to the series 1-1/2 times. I am a speed listener and sometimes miss pertinent facts when listening the first time through. I love to re-listen several times to the MHI stories because I always pick up something new that enriches the listening experience.
This is the the second time that I have read a book that is centered around a military theme. The first was the Alera series by Jim Butcher. Both authors handle the military themes in detail, but in such a way as to make their stories interesting to me. It also helps that there are romances in both series. I must say that the Alera series is probably my favorite audio experience ever, so comparing MH Legion to that series is high praise from me!
I LOVE the way Mr. Wyman does the deep scary voices. He handles alien accents, both friendly and enemy very well. He also handles non-American accents well (at least as far as I am concerned). He also changes the tempo of his reading when appropriate. A beautiful performance!
Yes - I didn't realize it was out until late last week, so I purchased it immediately, but held off reading it until 5 pm Friday, when I left work. What a great way to spend my weekend!
I look forward to the next book. For those of you thinking about starting this series, please do - it is well worth your time and money.
Up in the top 5 series
Oliver Wyman is perfect for this book. This is an outstanding performance.
I absolutely love this entire series, and the way that Larry Correia writes it. This latest addition is no exception, and is everything I had hoped for as an addition to the series.
Freezing in Idaho
I stumbled on this series, and was hooked in the first 15 minutes. Each story is original, and this was no exception. In fact this book is better than the previous books. Is that possible? If you like Harry Dresden, you'll like this series. The two series cover completely different material, but the underlying sense of humor and the original plots are common characteristics. And Zee and Harry are both tall and capable.
The downside of discovering a fresh and new book that becomes a series is the waiting! It's like waiting for Christmas when you were 5 years old. Wait, is that a bad thing?
I would have to say this book ranks in my top fifteen books I have listened to on Audible.
It followed along with the story so far and combined the characters from Monster Hunter Alpha into the plot.
He brings the characters to life and puts the right inflection on the dialogue that may have been missed when reading.
Most of Larry's Books I want to listen to in one sitting, but I have to eat, work, sleep, and shower. His books are very enthralling.
100% testosterone. So unbelievable and yet that is what makes this series so good. Ready for the next one. The narration is perfect for the attitude of the book. Very entertaining.
This is one seriously kickass romp through Las Vegas in ways you won't see coming.
Larry tells a helluva story and Oliver really reads it well, top notch in all ways!
Owen Z. Pitt. He is just my kind of hero. If it moves shoot it, if it doesn't shoot it anyways.
Never heard anything like this book before.
He is prob. the best narrator I have ever heard. He does every character perfect, from Owen, Julia and Tripp to Agent Franks and Management.
I saw sky, ground and sky again. Laughed really hard.
Just listen to it, read it, however you prefer it. You will have fun, be entertained and listen to an interesting story.
I am a blind lawyer and aspiring writer, trying to read a little bit of everything but partial to sci-fi and military fiction.
I read all four MHI books in a flurry of credit usage one week, and thought I'd dislocate something kicking myself as they were put on sale over and over again in subsequent months. The truth though is that I thoroughly enjoyed them then and am sure (with the possible exception of Alpha) will again.
One who notices such things may wonder at how the books appear to be getting shorter and shorter. I think this represents a fair measure of how the author has improved at tightening up his plotting and really developing a good pace that keeps you engaged and wanting to continue until there's no more book for you to plow through.
The monsters remain creative and the framework of the story allows for us to run into all sorts of new baddies without having to endure loads of travel scenes, probably the only good thing that can be said about the monsters coming to you. We also get little glimpses at some of our favorite characters' origins and how they've grown. Lastly, we get more hints that we're in for one heck of an endgame, with some more players making themselves known before the main event.
Anyone who may have wandered off after Alpha is strongly encouraged to give this one a try, particularly as we return to Z's stellar first-person narrative.
