Nora Roberts a.k.a. J D Robb is a master (mistress?) of creating great characters that one likes and villains that one can hate. You can't help pulling for the heroes in their trials. You know they are going to win out, but there is still the tension that makes it feel as if they could lose. The regular cast of characters is here in all their humor, intensity and charm.
I am a huge fan of Susan Ericksen. She can find things in a reading that I might not find for myself. More of a vocal actress than a reader she really brings the characters alive with her depth of understanding of the story and characters.
I have listened to the series (35 books!!), well I think I am on my third time now!
The characters are great, each one is interesting and comes to life as an individual as well as part of a whole in the stories. Susan Ericksen, well what can you say, there are a lot of good and even great narrators out there but she, at least with these books, surpasses everyone I have ever heard. Not ever narrator could do ever book justice, Ashford McNabb is the best for Maiden Lane series, but the In Death series would never, never, NEVER be the same without the smooth performance of Ms Eriksen, not to mention the distinct voice changes for each character. Kudos to Nora for the stories and Kudos to whom ever decided on Susan to narrate.
Love the In Death seies! I almost feel as if the characters are my friends, and the by-play makes me laugh!
Sweet Book Lover
As I do not read the print version of the In Death stories, I cannot fairly compare the audio edition to the print edition.
The most engaging aspect of the story is the search for how the crime is committed. Once that is discovered, the entrapment of the perpetrator is a bit boring.
Susan is a brilliant audio actor! She is very good at assigning characters appropriate accents, dialects, and even tempo to their speech. (The one exception is that all her Latino characters sound the same, which is not true to life.) Her performance gives every character a life that only precise and careful readers would or could do while reading on their own.
Hate, from one generation to another
I always love the stories, and the way Susan Ericksen brings all my old friends back to life....
Eve - She continues to grow and trust those around here - her interaction with Peabody and Mera continue to grow - she's learning to trust more than just Roarke in each book
I love that I can tell who each person is just by her voice.
no - I travel by car each day and listen while driving
When is the next one coming out????
I love these books- it rates tops with me!
I can't choose because I love all the characters in this series.
At the beginning of the book I liked the first scenes as they were so surprising.
When's the next book coming out?
Any of the IN DEATH books, this is as good as the first, 2nd, 3rd. Just because she can still keep our attention after so many of the future crime books.
I just love Roark.
No just kept me intrigued
Just that these books need to keep coming.
I am a semi-retired psychologist who likes to listen to books, especially mysteries, as I drive in the car.
J. D. Robb has a storyline that goes from book to book about the lives of their characters. I found this book to be more important for that story line than the story line of this particular book. When I think of the book as I am writing this, the interweaving of these two themes or story lines was subtle. I usually think of her books as those that have my stomach in knots and those that do not. This book did not have my stomach in knots (usually when the antagonist is going after one of the characters is when my stomach gets in knots), although the crime was horrific. Needless to say, I look forward to every new installment in the In Death series. If you have developed an interest in the characters, you never want to miss a book.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be". Most of us are every day hero's. Never mind the kind. Search for more. Listen.
Good plot turn.
Oh its an original.
Story telling is an art. She brings her art to life.
Think twice before you go into a bar owned by this Irishman. His establishments get targeted alot. Or maybe that's because as Eve might say he owns half the Universe. The odds are just there.
I hope to see many more books. I would love to see Eve and Roark start a family. That could take up maybe 3 books with murder and mayhem and cornering the market on diapers too. It boggles the imagination. :)
I love to listen to the Eve Dallas series and look forward to each new book.
I found myself more disturbed about the graphic topic of this book than ones in the past. I believe it was because of the believable terrorist attack aspect that made it so uncomfortable. That said, it is still a very good listen maybe all the more so because it was so imaginable.
Just more Eve Dallas
