I didn't know what to expect with this book but it was a nice surprise. I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic books and thought this sounded like a good listen. The book starts off quickly with action and keeps moving fast the entire time.
This is a book where the characters keep making bad decisions but thats what makes it a fun listen. Overall I am glad a picked this one up and will be picking up another one from this author.
NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
In RUN we follow the Colclough family as they battle to stay alive, together and for an uncertain future.
Oh my goodness this story left me a little traumatised. Mr. Crouch knows how to write a story that leaves you with a lot of WTF’s. There is a lot that happens in this book. A lot of unanswered questions. A lot of Oh my god moments. A lot of yelling “RUN!!!!!” to my audio book. And tears, yes there were tears in my eyes many times. As I listened to this book I found myself right there next to Jack, Dee and the kids. I found myself looking over my shoulder a few times.
This book is not for the faint of heart. Each page brings a new horror and just when you think it can’t get any worse it does. Seriously, if you can’t handle horror this is not the book for you. But if you like this genre or think you want to give this genre a try pick up a copy of RUN. But be warned this book is intense.
Phil Giganto did a great job of narrating this book. My only issue was some of the voices they were a little hard to tell apart at the beginning. But as the story went on I was able to tell the characters apart better and better. I am glad that I listened to this book on audio.
I purchased the book from Audible.com and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
Post apocalyptic listener with some thrillers mixed in. Follow me on twitter at @drewsant
“Run” takes the reader on a wild ride through a horrific wasteland. A well written book, which keeps the action coming throughout the read. The writing style helps immerse the reader in the story with so many sights, sounds and smells you might not want to go to sleep at night.
The characters have their faults which makes them more realistic, but the children can be a bit annoying at times (seriously author has had your parents tell you not to look about 20 times in this book do you still need to ask why?). The story borders on horror more than a true thriller but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was not a fan of Mr. Gigante's narration as all of the women (and Cole) all sound the same. He does a decent job of differentiating the male voices but needs some serious help on the ladies.
Enjoying one good listen after the next!
Loved that there were no chapter divisions announced in this audio book. Loved that it just kept going and going, the tension mounting and the twists and turns not predictable. A very good listen!
RUN FASTER DAMMIT!!!!!
This entire book is about one family's attempt to survive. You're given a dramatic and in depth look into four family members (a father, a mother, and two children) desparently trying to survive being hunted down to be murdered in a hate filled frenzy. At first your not sure why this one father is so desperate to run hundreds of miles with his unprepared wife and family. His only driving force is to save his family. To get them into Canada where no one will want to murder them for no reason. At first your puzzled because "RUN" starts out quickly and then escalates at break neck speed. The family is running for their lives and your still trying to find out why. However, "RUN" intense start is absolutely necessary for the story to work. It is a delight that virtually the entire book's character development is used to bring you, the listener, into the escaping family desperate struggle to survive. You ride the emotional rollarcoaster with this family. "RUN" has to be fast paced in order to set the scene for the family's escape. Also, the ending is so intense that you nervously cheer, or in my case, yell at the family to do something more, especially run faster. Anyone will love "RUN" if they love a fast paced character driven novel that keeps you hanging on, cheering, till the very end.
Phil Gigante is one of the best narrators out there. With every book he tackles he seems to know it's secrets. And then he has an uncanny ability to reel just about any listener into the books true story. He brings a book's characters to life. His narration is often what let's you, the listener, become emotionally evolved with a novels critical main characters.
RUN, NOT FOR YOUR HEALTH BUT FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!
Great faced paced book that you'll love to listen too. You'll listen to it in one sitting. It would be great on a cold (really cold) weekend. ENJOY
"Run" is a mystery, love story, thriller, adventure, and a plausible science fiction story. It is different from any book I have listened to or read before. (I have listened to 1,715 on Audible and read many more. I started reading fiction in 3rd grade and joined Audible almost as soon as in appeared online.) At 72 I didn't there was much that could amaze me but "Run" did. I almost returned it at several points in the book but then it would take an unexpected turn and I would have a hard time putting it down. It is definitely worth experiencing.
I found this to be very similar to Stephen Kings Cell but almost a PG version. The main characters are easily able to get out of impossible situations and overcome obstacles to easily for it to be believable. It was ok. I would have returned it if I haven't listened to it for free through Kindle Unlimited.
I might listen to this book again because the story was incredibly engaging and the narrator did a fantastic job! I don't think I'm familiar with this narrator but I knew he was doing a really great job when I'd try to fall asleep to my Audible, as I often do, and instead found myself staying awake later than usual and resetting the sleep timer!
There were a few, but I think the last couple chapters really brought the story full circle in a way few authors seem capable of achieving.
Yes, but I'm not sure I'd be able to stay awake that long!
I'm a huge fan of all things written by, or with, Blake Crouch but this was a rare time when I found myself frustrated with how long it took for the explanation of why what was happening, was happening. Also unanswered little things like at the beginning as names are being read out over the radio... how would it be possible to know who was hunter or hunted without visual confirmation? Details like that are the kind of thing that can bother me even when I've finished listening to, or reading, or a book. Overall though a book I wouldn't hesitate to recommend!
I am brutally honest. Popular, love everything they read, reviewers are scared to go neg. and risk their ranking. It's your money!!!
BEETS, THE HAVE NOT EATEN IN A WEEK, STARVING TO DEATH FOOD.
An action packed thrill ride, a mystery, and very entertaining. It is kind of a Zombie book without the Zombies. After seeing some lights in the sky (Day of the Triffids) most of the population become murdering monsters. They don't become dumb easy to out run, falling apart zombies, they still have their brains, they just want to kill anyone who has not seen the light.
JUST DO WHAT I BLANKING TELL YOU
It is also about a family that was dysfunctional, that comes together in tragedy. Those reviewers who concentrated on the gore, seemed to ignored this large part of the book. Is there a lot of gore, well yea!!, it is a horror book, not a romance. I did get tired of the kids always asking why, in the middle of a crisis, but that is how we raise them these days. Finally toward the end of the story the dad, tells them " Just do what I F tell you." When I was a kid my dad said to do it because he said so and he was the boss. We learned early in life not to question dad. This is a good entertaining book and well written.
I don't have a bunker and I would starve in 2 1/2 days, but I like to listen to people who do and wouldn't.
YES!!!! This story will have you driving the speed limit and past your house two or three times before you hit the button on your garage door opener.
The grip this story had on me was stronger than Day by Day Armageddon which involved no sleep and an earphone in one ear as I acted like I listened to every word my wife said, but I only had that masterpiece on 1.25 speed. Run, my fellow zombie - apacolyptic - end of times story seekers, took me on a vividly written and narrated journey that really did have me leaving work early and driving the long way home at speeds well below the limit as I listened at 2.0 speed in order to get as much in as possible before went into earphone mode (Mr. narrator Sir, you were still OUTSTANDING at 2.0).
The scene that started when I hit the play button and ended when the nice man from Audible thank me for my purchase.
I'm way too tough to cry.... wait... did my wife send pictures?
For those who enjoy a vivid apocalyptic, zombie SURVIVAL (you know what I am talking about), armageddon based journey you will not be disappointed. In fact I offer a money back guaratee you will soon re-prioritize your "That was a fricken great book" list as soon as you realize this bit of pure listening enjoyment is over. To the person who masterfully selected and organized the sequence of human language used to constantly describe ever evolving happiness, sadness, hopefulness, disparity, anger, and compassion in this gift of entertainment, thank you and very nicely done! Finally, this story wraps up in a way that concludes this families ordeal and was not designed to answer questions in a sequal; thank you again master word putter together-er!
