Oddly this book rates pretty high. Dwarves or traditional dwarves for the most part are course, unimaginative and stolid. Tandill ( around who this tale revolves ) isn't any of these things, he's warm, multidimensional and dare I say sensitive. The world view in this story is slightly skewed from what I think of as the norm. Nicely written and believable. Ok dwarves aren't really real but they could have been.
Tandill teaching the little girl how to make nails at the forge, give you an idea of the character of Tandill.
Tandill of course not that he doesn't do a very good job with each and every character. Dwarves, Elves dark elves, evil sorcerers the lot.
Chuckles here and there.
While I've met some dwarves I have liked, but this has altered my opinions of dwarves.
love dwarves(as a fantasy race), always have. nice to find a book were they aren't just comic relief. the writer makes them strong, hearty, and and resiliant. not just a sad declining race. loved almost every thing about the book. the characters were engaging, the story was compelling, and the style of writing was thoroughly enjoyable. the only flaw that I see (and it's not a flaw for me) is that there are predictable dwarven patterns throughout, and the "this is how we beat the bad guy" theme. that being said... LOVED IT. Can't wait to get the next book.
I truly enjoyed this book and sincerely hope that Audible adds the other books in this series soon. A wonderful and engaging story that is well written and keeps you hooked till the end.
I loved this book. This my desperate plea for Audible to produce the rest of the series in English. I have 300 books in my Audible Library and this ranked in my top 5. The story is fast paced but Mr. Heitz did an excellent job of building his world. Within two chapters I cared about Tungdil and what happened to him and his world. This is my first written review so I'll make it short and to the point, please Audible, please, please, please produce the other books in this series for English speakers and for the love of God have Matthew Wolf narrate. His voice work was wonderful and at times I would have sworn there were multiple voice actors playing these parts. This audio book was brilliant and I can only pray for more to come.
Excellent story with immediately lovable characters. It does great justice to the dwarven themes of the story, without disappointing you in what you think of in terms of the dwarven race, while also interjecting new ideas and themes. I am eager to leap back in with the next book in the series.
The audio narrarator does an outstanding job and beyond excellence with his character voices.
I sincerely hope audible gets the next two books in this series in English. They will have my money in a heart beat.
great story, it didn't keep me guessing as to how it would end, but it did keep me guessing as to how it would get there. A few twists I didn't see coming. Give them a chance!
