This is one of the few times I've reviewed a book. As a Seattle resident and former MS contractor I really enjoyed all the references. It made me laugh and I found the main character so quirky and endearing. I definitely recommend it.
It's hard to know what to compare "Bernadette" to, it's so unpredictable, entertaining and loopy. It's a perfect distraction: well-written, energetic, quirky. Great characters. I would definitely recommend.
Kathleen Wilhote's performance is an enormous plus. I'm glad I did the audio version for this book because of her and can't wait to find more books she reads. Extra bonus is her incredible vocal performance-- I assume that's her singing? Amazing.
This book was such a surprise! It was paced so well that it was hard to stop listening at any point, because I just had to know what happens next. It has the great combination of good character development and interesting plot.
Why I don't think it's for everyone:
- I love it when a book has characters who are fantastically flawed, yet written in a way where you absolutely love them anyway. However, I think some listeners might be put off by the characters' personalities and may not find as much humor in their actions as I did. If you are easily offended by people who are easily offended, this book may drive you crazy.
-This book also peripherally touches on some pretty sensitive topics with humor (hard to say which without spoilers). I found it worked very well, but some might not agree.
-The book mostly comprises emails and notes, with the occasional narrative thrown in. I know some readers don't care for that kind of format.
I gave the story 5 stars because I am still thinking about the characters a day or two after I finished, wondering what they're doing! I gave the narrator 4 stars because it was almost perfect, including a fantastic singing voice. I docked one star because I felt like Bee was voiced in a way that sounded more like an 8 year old than a 14 year old.
Kathleen Wilhoite's performance. Hands down.
Bernadette and Bee. Bernadette was misunderstood and always interesting. Bee had a great personality, knew what was going on and wasn't afraid to stand for what she believed.
The voices. She was able to capture the voices exactly how I could have imagined and it only helped me to be able to picture the story, characters and events that took place.
absolutely, you'll have to read to know!
It was wonderful.
6 stars for Kathleen Wilhoite! She is an amazing narrator and she brings this book to life in a fantastic way. The story is written in the form of letters, emails, notes and commentary which gives an insight into the minds and moods of the characters in a refreshing way. It's funny, sad, obscure and imaginative, but all the way it has a feel-good sense to it. I loved it.
I am very glad i was able to listen to this audio book. Great book, excellent story, and amazing recording. I am looking forward to read or listen more written by Maria Semple.
Favorite author of all time: Jane Austen Also: Jojo Moyes, Favorite romance novel: The Wolf and the Dove. Still luv that Wulfgar!
Bernadette is super wacky but loveable, and completely misunderstood by all who know her or think they know her.
Her husband is a revered guru at "Mr Softie" but a non-performer in their home lives.
They are transplanted LA'rs living among hi strung granola crunchers in Seattle. The story centers around their daughters private high school and their relationships with the other parents.
You also get an inside look at corporate life at the headquarters campus of Microsoft.
The story is filled with quirky but believable characters.
The author very deftly unfolds the story of how each family member came to be where they are now in their lives and then ties the story up in a very fresh unexpected manner. No spoiler alert here!
My attention was held throughout the book and was captivated with each reveal, both the good ones and the bad ones. You go Bernadette!
I look forward to reading much more by Maria Semple
Wish all books I've listened to were this enjoyable. Story is original, engaging and well written. Kathleen Wilhoite did a fantastic job reading, so much so that I will now seek out books that she has narrated. I don't like to write reviews if that gives an idea how much I enjoyed this.
