I understand why a lot of audiobooks are narrated in the same dialect of the characters in them - it makes the story feel like you're right there in it. But sometimes the wording was difficult for me to understand. I'd have to rewind bits to listen again and try to guess what the narrator had said.
This is a wonderful story of deep love, wistful regret and redemption. Anyone who is lucky enough to be a parent and fortunate enough to have married a soulmate will enjoy this story. It will make you shed a tear I guarantee you and this from a devotee of the Jack Reacher genre !
Don't let the comments regarding the reader keep you from experiencing this story.
I loved this book. I was quite surprised by the bad reviews it received: yes, you could see the consequences of the main characters' decisions coming from a mile away, but that was the whole point of the story! To me, this novel was about how each of us lives with our pasts (good & bad) and copes with our futures (also good & bad). I don't think you have to be a mother to understand Isabelle's desperate yearning for a child or a veteran to understand Tom's desire to repent for what he believes are his sins. How they moved forward together was what engrossed me. All the characters are flawed, but that only made them human to me-it didn't make them unlikeable.
Beyond a Good Read
Great story with poignant moments. Superb writing with metaphors that paint vivid mind pictures of the beautiful but stark location of the setting. Highly recommend
I have not but this was an excellent performance. It was as though he became the characters
I would not!
The story of the book is excellant, but i didn't like the reader. It was too much australian and not all people understand australian english. I lost some parts because of the reading but as i also use kindle parallel, i managed to return to parts and undestand them. Otherwise you must read the book it's great, now i want to see the movie
I couldn't follow the reader. His voice was too choppy and faded in and out. I missed too much. I tried.... I followed along in the book and words and parts were not there. I'll just have to read the book on my own.
It was so, so. Really depressing and just not my style. There was really no point to the whole story. The ending was horrible.
The narrator did a good job.
This book was depressing and slow. It was not at all what I expected.
Thought-provoking. What would you do?
I thought the end rather startling: the wife gone before her daughter returned. Left me empty feeling and disappointed. Both of their lives were shattered by this experience, but there was no resolution.
This is an awesome story. You laugh you cry and then you can't wait to get to the end. The performance was very good doing all of the characters. His delivery was right on the money. Definitely an excellent storyline no wonder they made a movie. I highly recommend.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Such a beautiful story of love and loss and tragedy and hope. I was captivated by each character and the story and scenery were deliciously written.
At times, I had a hard time understanding the narrator with his thick accent, but over time I got used to his speech pattern.
I highly recommend this as a book and as an audiobook.
