I feel like I need to read the book to fully appreciate the story. the narrator didn't so much read the book as MURMURED it. Rather frustrating when on my long commute. Still, the story was superlative. Highly recommend.
If you have children, or ever longed to have children but couldn't, it is likely this story will have a profound effect you. There are times that it takes excruciatingly painful turns and the despair or the characters is palpable. But so is the love between them. Beautifully written. Very good narration (I was surprised by the negative reviews). I will recommend this book to friends with the caveat that they keep a box of tissue nearby.
It has been a long time since a book has captured my thoughts and attention the way The Light Between Oceans did. The storyline is intriguing, characters are unforgettable, and the lessons are lasting and powerful. I bought several copies to give as gifts and I will definitely read this one again. Haunting and beautiful.
This story was not my favorite. All in all it is a story of loss and loyalty, but each portion of this story is very drawn out.
I wish there was more I could say about this one, but it is not one i would highly recommend.
The narration was amazing and I am shocked by how many negative reviews there were. This story is set in Australia, so having an Australian narrator lends authenticity and dimension that could not have otherwise been accomplished.
The story is well written with characters that become complex and touching at the same time. I loved it from the first moment to the last and I would highly recommend this book.
The description of Western Australian live style in the time after WW1
There were lots of them - the time when the boat washed up on Janus Island, the baptism day, ... the end
I loved the story, a lovely love story of a man for his wife, a mother for her child, the love of solitude which some may find surprising and the bond of love between parent and child that exisits long after. I was not expecting the flow of tears that surfaced as I listened to chapter 37, but the emotions were so genuinely unexpected, that they were also welcomed as a final release that had been subdued. Thank you, M.L. Stedman and Noah Taylor!
The narrator does all of the narration in a mumbled whisper. Even with noise canceling headphones, I could not hear him! I had friends listen and they all agreed that narrator did a poor job as he whispers and mumbles. He does fine when he does characters speaking. However, his narration was totally unacceptable and annoying.
Have the narrator not mumble and whisper when he narrates
The story seems good. I wish I had purchased the book. The audio version was a huge disappointment... asking for my money back
