I would probably NOT recommend this audiobook to a friend-- I'd tell them to just go out and buy the print or e-copy. For me, the narrator totally missed the mark on this. Her voice is largely monotone and most of her characters sound similar, which takes away from the beautiful tone of the story itself and how different all the characters are.
The story itself. Kristen Callihan is relatively new on the scene and her story is lush, complemented by the stage she sets in both mystery and setting. It's a brilliant combination of historical and paranormal elements.
After being so uninspired by the narrator, the only way to improve on the performance-- again, for me-- would be to have someone else do the reading. I was such a fan of this book that I bought the audiobook automatically without giving a listen to the sample first. I won't be making the same mistake again.
The moving parts of the story weren't done justice by this narrator. There are some particularly tense scenes that weren't given the emphasis and tension they deserved.
At the beginning I thought this was going to be a great read but towards the middle of the book it lost its momentum and my appreciation for it.
Narration was good, which can make or break a book. Strong heroine. Wonderful chemistry between the hero and heroine. Excellent dialogue/action from characters.
Audible addicted love mystery, lately stuck on love story. Mother of 1 Labrador and 1 perfect man. Work way too hard, and so ready to be retired
Absolutely excellent narrator she has just made it in my top 3 the story was very cool I enjoy the change from the normal romance
This was a nice pleasant pass time. I choose books like these when I don't have time or focus to put into huge epics, which are my favorites. Light beach reading, wasn't boring.
I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!
This book is very well written and read! The story was well paced and revealed just enough detail to keep the mind wondering about the rest of the mystery. The narrator was fantastic and actually enhanced the story with different accents and speech patterns that were very well done. Her interpretation of male voices was seamless and believable.
I totally enjoyed this book. The narrator is excellent. The story was great, the characters are great. I have already read the second book and it was good too. I like the different paranormal in the 1700's London setting. Totally worth the credits and/or dollars. I am looking forward to the third book, I hope it shows up soon on audible.
I read a fair amount of paranormal, steampunk, and related fiction and stumbled across this one while looking for something to rival the Parasol Protectorate series. This book doesn't belong on the same planet. Poorly written, the 'plot line ' is an excuse to get to the intimate parts- which are particularly unrealistic. The plot is poorly developed and there's no substance to the characters. Skip it.
Very much enjoyed. Mystery, snark, love, and a bit otherworldly. Ok. Maybe not a "bit". But a great introduction for the series!
